New Journey Pictures is thinking about releasing their long-gestated film adaptation of the Japanese anime Banana Fish in Y8. Ross Lynch (In the Aeroplane Over the Sea) and Mackenyu (Pacific Rim: Uprising) are attached to star as main characters Ash and Eiji, with John Malkovich, Ross Butler, Brian Tee, James Ransone, Alicia Silverstone, KJ Apa, Josh McDermitt, and Aldis Hodge attached in prominent supporting roles. New Journey Pictures wants Banana Fish to be a procedural crime thriller akin to The Square Mile or Numbers Theory. Martin Campbell (Casino RoyaleThe Foreigner) is still attached to direct.

Peyton Reed signs on to direct the long in hiatus Blue and Gold sequel, now titled Blue and Gold: A Retcon in Time. The project is aiming for a Y9 date but Y8 is a small possibility. The project is said to feature multiple superheroes from the DC universe and is said to be a major event.

In addition to Asa Butterfield, Jake T Austin, Michelle Rodriguez and Kevin Hart returning from the original as well as Bill Hader as Plastic-Man, new cast members are revealed:

- Nicholas Cage (National Treasure, Con Air) is playing Rip Hunter, a suave man who watches over time alongside Timekeeper (Kevin Hart)... who happens to be Booster Gold’s son from the future.

- Donald Glover (Gateways, Heartman, Atlanta) is playing Ted Kord, an archeologist/business playboy, who Booster Gold was supposed to be assigned to watch over at an older age, which was apparently halted due to fracture in the time.

- Ana de Armas (Pillars of Eternity franchise, Blade Runner 2049) is Zatanna Zatara, the most powerful magician in the universe.

- Janelle Monae (Hidden Figures, Moonlight) is Vixen, who can use and replicate animal attributes.

Infinite Studios has greenlit a new live action Black Dynamite film for Y8 titled Black Dynamite Returns. Michael Jai White will return to play the legendary Black Dynamite, as well as the director of the original film, Scott Sanders.

The film is said to have a major budget increase for more theatrical purposes but still be under $30M. Said to be a homage and parody of blaxploitation films of the 70s as well as the recent rise in nostalgic remakes.

The plot is said to have legendary Black Dynamite in the present day, who after a fight gone wrong with the fiendish Dr. Wu, has time travelled to the 2020, to see that somethings have changed yet still stay the same, as he discovers a nefarious plot to take down the black race involving a beloved hero of his. Black Dynamite must once again save the day, assembling a new crew as he adapts to modern times.

Joining the cast is Academy Award nominee Zendaya (Dear Evan Hansen, Olive the Other Reindeer, Spider-Man: Homecoming), J.B. Smoove (Harley Quinn, Curb Your Enthusiasm), Michael Rooker (Guardians of The Galaxy), John David Washington (Tenet, BlacKkKlansman), Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2, Joker) and Lakieth Stanfield (Sorry To Bother You)

LeBron James (Space Jam: A New Legacy, Trainwreck, Smallfoot) has replaced Will Smith in the cast of Endless Animation’s The Neighborhood as he joins on as a producer though his production company, SpringHill Entertainment.

The Neighborhood is also said to be somewhat scary as some inside the studio compare it in feels to 80’s Amblin and Gremlins in terms of tone and some of Laika’s work, which is apparently surprising given its $150M budget. Irving says “Not only is The Neighborhood a bold risk in Hollywood as it has a majority black cast and crew but it’s more scary than some of our other animated fare. It’s not traumatizing for children, nor is it something kids under 8 can’t handle, but it’s still quite chilling for a PG film. I think families will love it just like the rest of our films as even though we change key aspects, the formula of heart, humor dazzling animation and pure fun are still flowing through this film.”

The Neighborhood opens May 31st, Y8, as Endless put it in the lucrative post Memorial Day weekend spot in order to benefit as the first family film of the summer.
