Mojoguy
Original movies tend to have a harder time breaking out in the summer because of so much competition. Frozen wouldn't have made so much if it had been released in the summer.

Frozen, the name itself is already not summer-friendly, plus it went completely crazy during christmas/nY holidays, when the snowstorm, blizzard hit hard in most part of the world, and became just nice for frozen to break out and helping its buzz

SH stuff, TF stuff, you know, fantasy/sci fi/SH type of a blockbuster targeting teens. You don't get many WWII movies or movies skewing older in summer. But fair enough, maybe I didn't use the right word for it.

However it was on its 2019 slate, so it's either November 8th (which will likely move to November 1st) or December 20th.

That way it wouldn't have had to compete with Rogue One, AND it would have easily end up being the biggest animated movie of this weak ass year. No. If Disney wanted to move all their stuff to December tomorrow, other studios and theaters would have no choice but to bow down and either get steamrolled or move their date. 5

Avatar sequels 2-5 are coming, so Star Wars better get the hell out of the way in December!
filmnerdjamie
Mulan feels like an after-thought and not exactly one of Disney's animated films that screams for a live-action do-over. The '98 film wasn't even that big a hit (It did OK) or adored years after the fact like, say, Hocus Pocus. Feels more like a Pete's Dragon, a la "Fuck it... why not?"

If Disney wanted those Avatar spots, they would take them and Fox couldn't do shit about it. Avatar was a phenomenon flash in the pan due to the great use of 3D. Sure, it made money for theaters but it also has caused them nearly a decade of added costs and hassle. Many theaters (most actually) can't wait to completely dump out of 3D. Even IMAX sees the writing on the wall. I can't wait until Cameron and Fox come to theaters soon and tell them all the $$ they will need to spend to upgrade software or systems to properly show the new Avatar movies. Unless he has something revolutionary up his sleeve, it isn't going to fly like it did in 2009.

Disney has a stake in the Avatar sequels doing well because of that dumb Avatar theme park, so they'll move out of the way.

Of course, but my point was saying that literally any date they want on the calendar they can and would get. No other studio has 1/10th of their clout at this point. Don't misinterpret this as an endorsement of Disney in any way. They have become in a lot of ways the bully on the block and their strong arming of every situation does not go unnoticed in the industry. It is always telling of how you treat people when you are on top, and it would be great if they were a lot more humble because their fall will eventually come in the cycle like it does for everyone.
YM!
Taking a look at May 2018 with the only blockbusters being Infinity War and Han Solo. I think it's fair to say Disney dominates the marketplace. No studio wants to put a tentpole in between those two. I think the reason why IX is slated for May 2019, is for Disney to scare off competition for IW2 and then move it after Jedi's performance.
