You guys want to preserve something that cannot survive through normal market conditions?

This is a few days ago but it irked me enough to make a comment.

There is no such thing as "normal market conditions" without government oversight.

Well, actually there is. But generally speaking history has shown that oligarchies that can price fix among themselves (formally or in-) has generally been a Bad Idea.

So it real question is:  How much government oversight there is of 'normal market conditions'.  Everything else is details.

Why is it everytime Disney buys a company people (internet mostly) love to sing doom and gloom only to shut the fuck up when we start seeing results?

We just see what Disney did before.

What Iger has done is nothing special. Any Studio head with unlimited funds will lazily go after ready made successful brands and take all the undeserved  praise.

This is just plain silly, IMO.  Mostly because the urge to interfere/tinker/'improve' is very strong with folks large egos.  And, yes, many studio heads have egos the size of Mt. Everest.

I see it all the time in the sports world, for instance.  Far too many teams I know of have either been hurt or outright hobbled because owners think they know better than their general managers and start making disastrous short and long term decisions.

Hell, how many stories have we heard of 'executive interference' over the decades to know that 'sitting back and doing nothing' is one of the harder things to do in entertainment.  Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm being allowed to do their thing, more or less, without huge interference from Disney is in fact noteworthy.

Besides, you are completely ignoring the aspect of marketing.  Say what you will about Disney, they excel at marketing.  That alone is something that should be put in the "plus" category for Iger.

Actually when it comes to the Themepark side people aren't giant fans of Iger....

Movie fans love him way more. Theme park forums kinda bag on him and have for years. He neglected and went cheap on the parks up until recently it seems.

He runs the theme park poorly overall, everything he has greenlit has gone way way way over budget. They havent been meeting the numbers they want in Orlando now that Universal is a powerhouse #2, disney hotel occupancy rates are doing post 9/11 numbers.... Universal in Japan passed the Tokyo disney in attendance last year for the first time ever.

Disney Paris is still un profitable and in the red , Hong Kong disneyland is lost. attendance hasn't really gone up in love a decade and the local ocean park beats them in attendance.

Oh and Iger ended up loosing JL rowling to Universal. He wouldn't meet her demands and passed. Universal since acquiring Potter has over doubled its revenue. He woke a sleeping giant.

People are stupid, that's all. ANd every time Disney shows them how good they are. That's why Disney is the king of the world and the haters nothing more than posters on forums :P

Trump praised Murdoch on the deal so, this is probably happening.

Murdoch turned a single newspaper in Adelaide into a global media giant but in the end realised he wasn't quite big enough and sold to Disney.

Frank Lowy turned a single shopping centre in western Sydney suburb of Blacktown into the global Westfield chain of shopping centres and in the same week also decided it was time to sell.

plus Trump is in favour.

Well, that doesn't matter because there's a firewall between Trump and the Do... Hahahhahahaha, sorry.  Couldn't quite complete that sentence. :)

Spoiler

Trump being in charge matters a bit more for the FCC which is one if the agencies that signs off.  Whether the DoJ signs off is still an open question.  No doubt Trump has influence, but it isn't quite his personal fiefdom yet.  'Yet' being the operative word there.

PS: It actually matters more indirectly in regards that whoever Trump appointed to be the head of the anti-trust division inside the DoJ is presumably business friendly and that would be the guiding principle, not whether or not Trump liked the deal.

A fine distinction, perhaps, but an important one.

I would also add that the AT&T Time Warner deal stinks so much that it should have been opposed by the DoJ anyways.  But Trump's on-again, off-again feud with CNN sure makes it easier for AT&T/Time Warner to claim bias in the courts.  Trump and the phrase 'own worst enemy comes' to mind here.

I went to Disney World once and was very underwhelmed.   Not sure what the big deal is.   Apparently people keep flocking there from all over the world though.
