Best Picture Predictions - 2018

Recommended Posts

It's all gonna come down to what Focus thinks is their biggest players and what makes the most impact. Right now, BlacKkKlansman and Boy Erased are in the best positions (the latter will certainly premiere at TIFF, etc.).

Like I said, wait and see. It's the movie of the year. Media and public pressure is going to be big. They will want to atone for TDK and just scoring a blockbuster spot is not it. Coogler is in. 4 spots up for grabs left.

I know. SH movie stigma. Easier to break Picture barrier than Director (less spots). But I have a good feeling about this.

But it's not good enough? I get it had an important political message if you call holding a grudge against colonizers still till this day important but that doesn't mean it deserves a BD spot, or BP for that matter

So we got Netflix releases with the clout of the Coens and Cuaron behind them this year. Will be interesting to see if they can improve on Mudbound and break through into the biggest categories, provided they're good/acclaimed enough obviously.

I posted about hearing great things about BlacKkKlansman and that Melissa McCarthy movie in January. I thought that Melissa McCarthy's might just be for the performance, but the movie premiering at Telluride is pretty big, suggesting that they are pushing more than just the performance. I posted a while ago that the things being revealed about Boy Erased are not great, so it appearing to not play at the festivals, at least not at Toronto initially, is really not surprising.

The Coen movie seems unconventional for the academy (given it seems like a collection of short stories), but I think Roma has a great shot, as it’s seeming like they’re very confident in it

Eighth Grade and Elsie Fisher deserve the nominations that they won't get.

A Summer indie usually hits and Eighth Grade is A24’s best shot at a nom this year.  I think it has a chance (idk about fisher though because of age)

Have to wait and see what kind of impact BlacKkKlansman makes first to see what will emerge as that summer indie favorite.

Sight unseen, I'm not big on Eighth Grade's chances. It's tempting to say it will follow in Lady Bird's footsteps (A24 coming-of-age comedy with a female lead and glowing reviews), but Lady Bird had a late year release, a twice-nominated lead whose previous nods were for Best Picture nominees, and a writer-director with a pre-existing small-but-vocal niche of fans (plus extra motivation to shine a spotlight on female filmmakers in the wake of MeToo). Eighth Grade, on the other hand, has a slate of unseen films to compete against, a previously unknown lead, and... Bo Burnham (I love the guy's previous work, but I doubt that many Oscar voters are also fans of young YouTube comedians). It's not impossible, but scoring major nods will be a tough battle.

The best Eighth Grade can hope for is a Screenplay nomination. It's in a much weaker position than The Big Sick was last year.

Yeah, having seen it, seems like the kind of film that would only get a lone screenplay nom. Its a shame cause the film is pretty damn good.

Shit looks like an anonymous TV movie. I know we all want female filmmakers to contend and win but come on.

literally if you replace every nomination for Mary Queen of Scots with nominations for The Favourite (like for real not even costumes? this is gonna be fox searchlight's big play this year) the predictions start to make a little sense.

I would also be surprised if the Barry Jenkins got shut out. I was impressed by the trailer (and I'm a known Moonlight skeptic), I know it's just a trailer but if the movie's as good I'd give it better chances than I would to Roma or Klansman.

Lanthimos is also definitely primed to hit all the big categories this time.
