There are several percolating, but sources say he is eyeing Indiana Jones, and then would either precede or follow quickly with another pic. I’m hearing that one might be his dream project, a new version of West Side Story. Spielberg’s camp had no comment on his plans. Spielberg has long been interested in a new version of the 1961 classic movie West Side Story, which was co-directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins from the Arthur Laurents, Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim Broadway musical. Frequent Spielberg collaborator Tony Kushner has been working on the script. Edited May 7, 2019 by CoolEric258

If the man's still able to churn out two movies within a few months of each other...

I imagine it'd be Indy then West Side Story, as good as Spielberg is, there is no way he could direct a musical like he directed The Post while Indiana Jones is in post production. I like the original film and the musical but I wonder how you can make it different as you have to keep the Jerome Robbins choreography and I imagine you can't alter the story either. MrGamer
*Conversation with a friend on this* Friend: Hey, they're remaking West Side Story. Me: Why? I thought the original was good. I'm not really interested in a remake. Friend: Spielberg is directing it. Me:
SLAM!
Musicals really are making a resurgence after all. I mean, the confidence elicited from the interest in The Greatest Showman is likely why Speilberg seems to be moving forward with this. That's what I think. Cap
the biggest shame is Arthur Laurents isn’t alive to immediately direct a rebuttal.

filmlover
Spielberg is 71 and churning out three movies in less than a year (and two of which aren't exactly quickie productions). We all can only hope to be that awesome when we reach that age.

But Stephan Sondheim is still around.... Edited January 26, 2018 by dudalb

And they had better not mess with the Berstein/Sondheim songs........ That would be really, really stupid and an act of Hubris of the worst kind.
