Hot off directing back to back pictures in the Oscar contender The Post and the upcoming Ready Player One, Steven Spielberg is now figuring out his next two directorial vehicles. There are several percolating, but sources say he is eyeing Indiana Jones, and then would either precede or follow quickly with another pic. I’m hearing that one might be his dream project, a new version of West Side Story. Spielberg’s camp had no comment on his plans.

Spielberg has long been interested in a new version of the 1961 classic movie West Side Story, which was co-directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins from the Arthur Laurents, Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim Broadway musical. Frequent Spielberg collaborator Tony Kushner has been working on the script.

He'll most likely end up making both, if possible. If the man's still able to churn out two movies within a few months of each other...

I imagine it'd be Indy then West Side Story, as good as Spielberg is, there is no way he could direct a musical like he directed The Post while Indiana Jones is in post production.

I like the original film and the musical but I wonder how you can make it different as you have to keep the Jerome Robbins choreography and I imagine you can't alter the story either.

the biggest shame is Arthur Laurents isn’t alive to immediately direct a rebuttal.

Laurents wrote the play,Robert Wise directed the film.

But agree that Laurents play is pretty good, and most of it was retained for the 1961 film. Hope Kushner knows enough to leave well enough alone.

But Stephan Sondheim is still around....

And they had better not mess with the Berstein/Sondheim songs........

That would be really, really stupid and an act of Hubris of the worst kind.
