If Black Panther makes 200 m OW and 550 m DOM that's one of top 3 biggest box office shockers of the 21 century...

Easily.

Can anything with Marvel be a shocker these days. Don't doubt Marvel.

Infinity War coming for that opening record!

This weekend is madness. I had made a chart of potential 4-day ows and multipliers/dom totals but it's useless cause my 4-day ow high-end was 195. DP did 2.39x the 4-day ow. If BP has a 225-230 4-day, needs "only" 2.17-2.22x for 500 dom.

"BP as #1 film of the year back on the menu boys"

Looks like the average prediction for BP OW was 100 m a few months ago.

I assumed that BP would have great legs, while only opening slightly bigger then Homecoming. I was so off.

That's bad for the winter game, but I'm actually glad that Black Panther overperformed. It's an awesome film, so I couldn't be more pleased with its box office.

Quote

Sunday, 12:31AM: Disney/Marvel’s Black Panther is even more ferocious than ever imagined. Late night estimates (not from Disney) indicate that T’Challa is headed to $194M over three-days after a super Saturday night between $66.8M-$68M which is only 11% down from Friday on the high-end. Also if you back out $25.2M Thursday previews from Friday’s $76.4M, Saturday’s business is still technically +33%.  So that means business for Black Panther wasn’t front-loaded.

‘Black Panther’ Rips Apart Box Office Records: 3-Day Opening Rises To $194M+; 4-Day At $223M+

I should be shocked at how well BP is doing, but nothing surprises me anymore with Marvel.  Other origin movies haven't come close to what it's done.  This could have been an Ant man or Doctor Strange or even Thor.  But it's Marvel so everything they touch and market turns to gold.  For this to have close to a 200 million dollar opening weekend is pretty insane.  Sure, it's not an original film as it has the Marvel universe but in a way, it is original.  I just mean that although it continues a story that was started in Civil War, this is his first solo outing.  And it blew away every first super hero film in terms of gross. Only the first Avengers is going to have a higher opening weekend for super hero movies.  That's just simply incredible.  Marvel is doing things no other studio has ever done.  Incredible.
