Weekend Estimates (Deadline) The Lorax - 70M+

Recommended Posts

That Saturday increase is INSANE. I know it's not unprecedented, but I thought this would be a near repeat of Horton's run. This story certainly isn't any more familiar. I think casting Efron and Swift really played a larger role in this than some of us might think. So great to see the box office alive again, hopefully JC can keep the pace going next week.

UPDATE… Abbreviated Weekend Results: Obviously huge pent-up demand Posted Imagefor a true children’s classic, an ‘A’ CinemaScore, plus an overheated box office converged for a monster hit. Universal’s The Lorax is lunging past $79M could bis the biggest grossing film ever from a Dr Seuss book, as well as the biggest opener of 2012, the 4th biggest March opener, the 8th biggest animated PG film, and the 5th biggest animated 3D film. The $70M-budget toon from Chris Meledandri’s Illumination Entertainment (Despicable Me, Hop) also is the 8th biggest Universal opener of all time. And remember: the next animated kid film isn’t until April 27th. Yowza! Warner Bros also had mega-success with its low-budget found footage R-rated opener Project X which hit $20+M. Overall weekend biz is up for the 9th weekend in a row in 2012: +15% over last year. But will next weekend require me to post an autopsy report for John Carter?

1. The Lorax (Universal) NEW [3,729 Theaters]

Friday $17.4M, Saturday $30.2M, Weekend $68.7M

2. Project X (Warner Bros) NEW [3,055 Theaters]

Friday $8.1M, Saturday $7.9M, Weekend $20.4M

Well, THE LORAX gets

an excellent Sat. bounce 89% – which will put the Sat. figure in the 33 million

range. 3day figure is north of 70 million – perhaps 73 with a shot at 75.0.

Project X is -2% from Friday – which isn’t bad. Sat. number close to 8.0 -

so this could land 20-21 for the weekend.

Act of Valor is -32% from last Sat. 6.450. 3day will be 14.0-14.5 and a

cume of 45.6.

Safe House holds well -29% for 3.650. FSS = 7.5-8.0 and cume will be

108.8.

Good Deeds drops -49% for 3.450. Weekend just north of 7.0 and cume of

26.0.

Journey 2 -40% from last Sat. for 3.4. 3day not quite 7.0 and cume of

85.5.

The Vow has good hold of -38% for 2.8. Weekend should be 6.0-6.3 and cume

111.5.

This Means War -25% for 2.8. 3day around 6.0 and cume of 41.8.

Ghost Rider -40% for 2.350 for FSS around 5.0 or close to. Cume 45+.

The Artist claims 10th place with Sat. gross of 1.850 and 3day of 4.0.

Cume 37.2.

Wanderlust has about the same for Sat. but look for the Sunday gross from

the Artist to carry it into the top 10.

Wanderlust ends just below 4.0 for a cume of 12.6. Just read the fine

print – WANDER (ing around) LUST (ing for grosses.)

Weekend is up a healthy 28% from last year.
