@WrathOfHan Thoughts on A Wrinkle In Time's prospects? If it really drops sub-40% this weekend, does it have a tiny 100M shot? I mean, it doesn't have any new direct family competition for a while, and I suspect IW will give it double features.

Let's see:

Mar 30: 4.7M (2.4M weekdays, 85.7M Total)

Apr 6: 2.8M (900k weekdays, 89.4M Total)

Apr 13: 1.2M (400k weekdays, 91M Total)

Final Total: 94M (2.84x)

Never say never, but it's going to be pretty hard.

Why are you projecting so much lower than Deadline's $5.1m this weekend? Also, TL held like shit and your projection for WiT would be holding even shittier.

I don't think the low Friday increase means it'll jump today; kids films almost always drop after Good Friday.

Not sure if this has already been posted, but in case it hasn't:

Saturday AM: Figures updated There’s some sigh of relief over at Warner Bros. as their Steven Spielberg movie Ready Player One appears to be beating its tracking figures with a $52.3M four-day opening.

Here’s an amazing, original ode to virtual reality and everything that’s Spielberg based on Ernest Cline’s bestselling YA novel, and for weeks tracking had this pic in the scary range of $38M-$42M over 4-days which would be a truly atrocious start for this movie which cost all in between production and P&A $300M-$325M (Village Roadshow is co-shouldering production costs).

However, Warner Bros.’ smartly executed world premiere launch at the hipster-tech crossroads of SXSW (which fans went gonzo for), coupled with a riveting virtual reality stunted campaign (they have a Maze/arcade at Hollywood and Vine) — all of this seems to be paying off. Rivals love to say that Warners overspends on their TV spots (an accusation the studio denies), but if that’s actually going on here, then more power to them: This millennial IP is a potential start to a new franchise and it deserves to win. A four-day opening at this level assists in propelling Ready Player One‘s legs before Avengers: Infinity War arrives at the end of April.

Here’s how the top pics are looking:

@Noctis Tyler Perry has a great formula down with their theater counts - why put your film on empty screens (which is what most anything above the TC would be) when you can concentrate the film in the areas that will give it $$.

Its a very typical non-Madea TP Theater Count (and even Madea isn't huge)

I would be surprised if WiT manages the 5m+ that deadline is expecting. As @WrathOfHan said, most Kid's skewing films do not increase on the Saturday after Good-friday. Will of course be curious to see if Wrinkle can buck the trend but Wrinkle has been heading for the Prince of Persia / Tomorrowland sub-100m waste land since OW.

They’re using Beauty and the Beast as a comparison for the pattern, but I don’t especially love it. I have it closer to 4.7 ish
