Here's a funny story...not quite smoke signals, but back before DL and twitter and RTH and Empire, we had no way of tracking films on their opening night.  There was a user named Xiayun and he was maybe the best predictor and derby player we had, one of the best I've ever seen.  There was some website he used that had live updates of what people were saying about a movie on opening night.  It wasn't imdb and obviously not twitter because it had n't been invented yet.  He somehow found a way to correlate user comments with the Friday number and more times than not he was within 10% of the number.  We used to sit around the forums on mojo and wait for him to live update us.  It was fascinating how he figured it out.

 

I miss that guy.

I wanna remark how crazy Fallen Kingdom and Incredibles 2 mirror JW and Inside Out - just in switched positions. Like the 2 films in 2015, they are so close together in their numbers these past 3 weeks, its really remarkable.

DP2 is 1.32m away from IM1 after this weekend of 0.46m. Tough considering MI6 might hit the theater count further but not impossible.

Consideirng the weekdays are strong and needs to add just 2x the 0.46 weekend to hit 318 I think it will get there. But not much more.

This weekend really did not turn out the way I expected. I'm going to get slaughtered in the Derby.

 

Also, Sorry to Bother You... Huh. It seems pretty clear where they were going with it, and after you get over the "WTF?!" the message of the second half really does kinda keep going in the same direction as the first. I feel like they decided to make their point in a way that guaranteed it would be memorable and discussed, and they were willing to ditch just about everything from the first half to get there. Lakeith Stanfield and Armie Hammer were both great.

My Dallas city theater was PACKED yesterday.  It was too hot to do anything else.  Lines for the concession stand were crazy, drink machines were almost all out of drinks, it was bizarre.  I was finally seeing JW, but looked like people just wanted to be inside where it was cool.  When it's like 112 outside, not many options.
