I see Wonka is having a worldwide promo tour, but it's all quiet for Aquaman 2. Are they not bothering or is it too soon?

Imo they won’t spend too much in marketing this, they clearly have no faith in it and it costs 215M already

I fully expect the reviews to drop after the movie open OS too, like The Marvels

The only hope for this movie is if like the first movie people ended up liking it and holidays carrying it to a decent total

It's likely too soon, since Aquaman 2 is released on December 22, while Wonka on December 8.

That said, WB likely has a lot more expectatives for Wonka than Aquaman 2. Not to mention that Wonka has more possibilities to be helped by a worldwide promo tour than Aquaman 2.

Pretty sure Momoa has just hosted SNL, right? Probably a strategy to promote the movie. Funnily enough, Timothee Chalamet did the same.

But yeah, Wonka comes out a couple of weeks earlier, so the marketing must be stronger.

I do think a promo tour for Aquaman 2 will be awkward as hell  though, considering issues like Amber Heard, the end of the DCEU, and superhero movies flopping left and right.

At this point it's best to market Aquaman 2 as an action fantasy and completely ignore the fact it's a superhero hilm, the entire is genre is dying this year.

Good book, decent movie.

Mostly though, the kind of bomb that made studios very wary of investing in the YA genre again, so probably one of the main reasons(Divergent says hi as well) so many YA book movies are either stuck in development hell or becoming TV shows instead.

This movie came way too late and just served as the thing that fully decreed the end of the big YA blockbusters. HG:BOSS doing decently well might just energize the whole thing again though, we'll see.

I'm betting on the former. I also bet Warner wished the strikes would bleed into next yearand are probably wishing the guild ends up rejecting the deal on the 5th so that they wouldn't have to do any press tours. I still don't think we'll get one with all the baggage attached, and that's without getting into the pending franchise reboot. Warner has even less faith in this than Disney had in The Marvels, and that's bad.

Hell, my references to it whenever I respond to people still seeing Christmas as a guaranteed airbag are likely the only times this movie was even mentioned by anyone since it died in 2018. I'm shocked anyone other than me still remembers it. It also likely solidified Peter Jackson's film fatigue, and is why he's just remastering old war and concert recordings into documentaries now. He certainly has the retirement fund to get away with coasting on that until Azrael comes knocking.

I'm still pissed he made those dumb Hobbit movies, should have handed them off to JJ Abrams or something. Would have kept his God like adoration from Tolkien nerds.

Gonna be pretty difficult. Steady hand studio filmmakers like Lawrence don't really exist anymore. And Lawrence really clearly put in a ton of effort into HG:BOSS that won't be replicated.

I remember being so hyped for this movie, I had just read the book and saw Peter Jackson was involved and knew how epic it could turn out! I really enjoyed the first trailer as well, but it was really hard to interest people in another YA movie back then, and when the movie itself turned out to be just decent, the bombing was inevitable. I was quite disappointed, so no, you aren’t the only one who remembers this movie clearly.

I can actually see some parallels to Aquabro 2 now that I think about it, so you might have a point.

Marvels will remain the biggest bomb of 2023.

I just can't see Aquaman failing that bad with Christmas break. That's 10 days where each day acts like a Saturday.

We’ll cross that tide when we come to it, but for now Marvel’s prestigious  “biggest bomb” title is under threat by Wish…

I really don't think the idea that audiences hates supeheroes lines up with stuff like Guardians The Boys, Invincible, Gen V etc. Loki also was just very well received with its series finale. I think it's just more choosy.

But, almost all the series you mentioned above are "free" - I love free superhero stuff and end up watching all of it eventually (although I haven't gotten to Invincible and Gen V yet)....if you want me to pay $20/ticket or about $100 for my family to see in theater...well, at this point, it's mostly a "pass" unless I think it's gonna be amazing...

This year, I watched Spidey and Shazam 2 in theater (and Shazam was on cheap day) - that's it.  But, I've seen all the supers, except The Marvels.

And I think I'm more the norm GA "invested" supers viewer...
