A prequel? They are an iffy concept even when they focus on characters that fans might be inclined to care about (the younger days of older characters we already know, or the ancestors of our faves). With The Hunger Games, it's a prequel set after an ultimately failed rebellion and we know where are the world ends up. The general audience bailed on Mockingjay and that had characters people knew and cared about, so what is the appeal of this as a movie, again? 

 

Though I guess if the prequel is a big hit first as a book, it might build anticipation for a movie...

The originals finished 3, 1, 2 and bottomed out at a ghastly 7 domestically in their release years. That’s pretty broad appeal. 

The concerns about new characters and genre are fair, but these movies were very strong really recently.

There's not many movies in the past 10 years that opened over $100M that weren't Marvel/DC, but The Hunger Games got on the board all four times, peaking with movie #2. Not saying it'll do it again - we know how these spinoff/prequels can decline, look at Fantastic Beasts - just making a point at how remarkable the series was in its heyday. Lions Gate is just going back the once-successful well again like all these other studios do even if its drier now than before. The YA dystopian genre in particular has retreated a lot even since 2015.

The problem with the YA Distopian   genre  is that the well is dry, it's been overused, except for a few diehard fans people are just tired of them. It's really hard to come up with new variation on thems,there have been so many.

If they keep the costs down, this film will make money on the strength of the specific Franchise, but I don't see how it could not be just more of the same. It  will be profitable, but not at the same level of the original series.

I don’t think anyone is expecting this to make Hunger Games level box office though - and it doesn’t need to. Mockingjay Part 2 was a $125m budget movie that still extremely profitable.

#1 film of all time is YA

also as mentioned above ready player one did well last year.

 

Just have to give people a product they want to see.

No one said YA is dead. What they said is that the Revolt against Distopia genre is pretty much exhausted.

And YA existed a long time before Harry Potter;it's not like Rowling invented the idea of novels aimed at the middle teen audience. Robert Heinlein and Andre Norton wrote Sci Fi novles pitches at that age group, Heinlien as far back and 1947. (Though they were called Junivniles back then). Both Moved on to adult fiction, but what we call YA books have been around for a long,long, time.

1. Everytime one of these wannabe YA franchises comes in, people ALWAYS compare them to THG. Last year, during the release of Darkest Minds, critics spent more time writing about THG than the movie itself.

 

2. According to who? There's a reason why Lionsgate has choose to invest on a THG prequel instead of trying to do something new with Twilight, and it's not like Mayer would deny writing a new book since she said several times she would be open to do it.

 

 

3. The lowest THG movie still made nearly $300m DOM and it would've reached it if it wasn't for TFA, but anyway.

This is what happens when you just care about money and not quality .Mockinjay had no reason to be split into two parts and the finale was rushed.It left a bitter taste at the very end...not to mention people had high hopes after how good Catching Fire was.

 

And I find this particular movie unnecessary as well.I mean we all know the bad guys won and years of civilians being murdered followed.
