Weekend Thread: Downton Abbey 31M, Ad Astra 19.2M Rambo 19M, It2 17.2M, Hustlers 17M

Recommended Posts

Bit of a shame that Abominable looks to be a nonstarter (feels like it'll open under Smallfoot at this point). We could have had 7 consecutive weeks of a movie opening to over 30M (It2, Hustlers and Downton already did it, Joker could triple 30M, Gemini Man is tracking to about 28-30M, which could go higher if reviews/later marketing are strong, Maleficent/Zombieland both have decent shots at reaching 30M+). Ah well

I think it could go slightly higher on account there's been nothing for families in forever (look at how well Lion King and Dora have been holding the past month).

Will be interesting to see if Downton Abbey's success paves the way for more popular TV shows at the movies. I bet that Breaking Bad movie premiering on Netflix in a few weeks would've been a decent success had it gone to theaters first and held off on streaming for a few months.

The Walking Dead film is getting a theatrical release but I suspect it won't do that well. WB has The Many Saints of Newark next year but that's a prequel rather than a continuation.

Downton I think is probably the exception as it's had a bit of a break. It's kind of like Sex and the City which had a similar four year gap between the final episode and the movie.

I don't know, I feel like we said the same thing about Ninjago and Storks, and those movies barely crossed 20M.

Maybe. Given the dearth of family movies it feels like one of either Abominable, The Addams Family, or Maleficent over the next few weeks should put up substantial amounts of money (most likely Maleficent since it's the most broadly appealing of them all).

If Abominable fails to impress next week it just makes Hotel Transylvania's performance even more impressive as no other recent September animated release could come close to what they opened twice in this month.

If Abominable fails to impress next week it just makes Hotel Transylvania's performance even more impressive as no other recent September animated release could come close to what they opened twice in this month.

HT had the double whammy of having Adam Sandler but also being horror lite.

Cloudy 1 and Cloudy 2 also did quite well in September. I'm surprised WB isn't putting The Witches in that slot next year as they have The Many Saint of Newarks instead.
