rumor says that the movie could be released nearly one week after the 7-day national day public holiday, probably on oct. 11. and oct. 12 will be a work day due to the days in lieu arrangements in china. so it's not a good sign for the box office boom in china, and it's obvious that Chinese audience won't be excited to see a film full of courtroom trials and overloaded lines.

The National Day period is unofficial blackout period to protect local films, so there is no way for a HLW film to open there at that time anyways. Nothing shocking.

I’m sort of surprised by some of the spin in this thread. Coming out of Venice with scores way lower than the first one is a giant red flag. Hoping for the audience to enthusiastically eat up a film that seemingly doesn’t commit to being a real musical or a real courtroom drama is just sort of denial.

Wouldn’t be shocked if pre-sales and opening weekend are still high from the large fanbase who will ignore anything negative from the same highbrow critics who praised the first one, but once word gets out…eh.

Honestly, this making less than its predecessor wouldn't be a shock and was probably bound to happen regardless. Sequels to movies that were such "lightning in a bottle" hits to the point that they overperformed even the studio's highest expectations (see: Alice in Wonderland '10, IT: Chapter 1, etc....even Phillips' own The Hangover: Part II ended up making less overall than the first movie despite opening infinitely higher) are prone to drops due to having no room to grow, and there's no real hook to this beyond the stunt casting of Gaga. Plus, it's been 5 years since the first, which itself was clearly conceived as a standalone movie that didn't demand a sequel.

It's just a question as to how much of the audience it'll end up bleeding.

Been preaching this for the past months

“Boring” is basically the kiss of death. How do you make a musical with Joker and Harley Quinn boring? It’s lucky that Venom 3 is a completely different type of CBM so it can coast for a few weeks, even with a massive drop.

It’ll be really fun if Beetlejuice Beetlejuice or Venom 3 outgrosses it.

It’s looking like that Venom: The Last Dance will be the best CBM this year for me.

Anyways, reviews aside until Deadpool blew up and some momentum highs from the summer, I felt Joker 2 would act more like Black Panther: Wakanda Forever or Spider-Man 2, a sequel to a zeitgeist reaching CBM that cannot recapture the heights of the original due to how big the ceiling of the first made. Reception is still questionable but does look to be pointing out to be a noticeable decrease than the first. Think hype will carry it to a large OW and tbh I don’t see critic reviews tanking it like say an MCU or traditional DC movie because I think mixed to bad reviews is more or less what the fandom expects, but I do think legs will be questionable based on what reviews have said so far.

Doesn't matter, it'll likely open much higher than the first one and even average legs could carry it to nearly a billion just off strong start.

Would need a $350M+ WW opening to make $1B off mediocre legs. That would be a bigger opening than Wakanda Forever, Love and Thunder, Guardians of the galaxy 3, The Batman, Barbie. Seems highly unlikely imo

Why not? Aside Barbie, everything else looks feasible. Wakanda Forever is stronger domestically, but much weaker overseas. Love and Thunder, Guardians 3 and The Batman global debutes are nothing special, The Batman opened on par with first Joker. ~350M assuming it gets China release this time.

Why do people think this is going to have bad legs? Come on, the reviews came out a month in advance and before pre-sales started. People will know this is a musical and that it got bad reviews when they buy tickets.
BvS and Multiverse of Madness both had reviews released the week they opened.
If it's a flop, it's going to flop in the first weekend.

Reviews from Venice were also mixed for the first film. Being polarising is not a bad thing. It helped the first movie.

So they are all stock songs, no new hits. This is very disappointing. You call Lady Gaga and you don't have her compose new music!?

Songs here are too tell a story like a pure musical (they use songs from other musicals for this reason). It's not a star is Born.

Lady Gaga is not that kinda of storyteller/ musical songwriter- composer. Writing a musical Is not like writing pop songs.

And even without that to write a full musical you need a lot of time and effort, probably She wasn't interest to spend like a year or more just to write a musical.

As already proven Is not true. After Venice RT for joker was 89%, for this is 60%.

Proof the First movie was not apprecciated especially by americans critics for the political intepretations of the movie (during Trump presidency, remember that), while now the problems for people didn't like it are different.

I didn't expect all new songs, I knew it was a jukebox musical, but at least one big launch piece absolutely yes! Just one, to identify the film and go to the Oscars! Very disappointing...

Well I don't think is spoiler to say according to a letterboxd review there is actually an original Song (probably they made It at least One to get an original Song nominee) but you don't notice It cause is there between a big mix of old tunes so doesn't shine that much. Most people didn't even notice is original
