Damn so I'd say Marriage Story and Irishman are no longer BP front runners. I'd argue that this really boosts 1917's chances. OUATIH as well for sure, but I feel like if they gave BP to that it would just be basically a lifetime award for Tarantino

Netflix should be worried about this. If they can't make a 1) universally acclaimed 2) Scorsese film 3) starring De Niro, Pacino and Pesci a BP frontrunner, then the talent will start noticing.

At least they had the whole black-and-white spanish film with complete unknown actors (even in Mexico) thing going against them last year.

Of course the dont need to win anything for audiences to notice that there's a lot of Netflix films in the awards season, but at this point the only major category they might win is supporting actress? They'd be more than fine if they can get back-to-back director winners, though.

It's not his last movie though. Even beyond that it's probably one of the three best films of the ones that'll probably get nominated

Eh idk, the last hour of the movie on its own sure, but Marriage Story, Parasite, heck eve Rocketman I liked way better

Their audience has noticed that The Irishman is one of the best movies of 2019. And unlike Roma last year, it is also one of their most-watched programs. It is a complete success for Netflix, awards are secondary as always.

Didn't Netflix buy a historic theater in NYC that was gonna close as a place where their movies (at least the ones they choose to send to theaters) can play? Maybe they'll do that with more theaters to try and establish themselves as more of a "theatrical" studio if they are still determined to stick their movies on their streaming service almost immediately.

This doesn't really make much sense, particularly in relation to The Irishman, which Scorsese couldn't get made anywhere else. Increasingly Netflix are making films that the studio industry won't make anymore, and Netflix's lure is not "your films will win awards" but rather that they provide the space for creative freedom and the ability to make their films.

Besides, with Roma winning awards last year, and The Irishman and Marriage Story winning awards this year, Netflix is on a good trajectory thus far. None of the films may have won them a Best Picture Oscar (if neither The Irishman or Marriage Story win Best Picture at the Oscars), but only one film a year can win the award. Roma still won 3 Oscars, 2 Golden Globes, and major critics awards. Likewise, The Irishman and Marriage Story have won major critics awards, and look to score a wealth of Oscar and industry nominations for Netflix (with Laura Dern looking to score SAG/Oscar wins at this point), as they did Golden Globe nominations, even if they don't prove to be eventual winners.

Peace,

Mike

At this point Netflix should probably start their own awards show. Hollywoid is never going to do them any favours.

They're probably pulling their hair out wondering "how do we finally get a Best Picture win?" right now lol.

It's what they should expect when their #1s are movies that traditional studios took a pass on. Netflix does make it easier to watch a black-and-white 1970s drama in Spanish/Mixtec or a nearly four hour mob drama with de-aged De Niro and Pacino...but how much do voters want to see these things vs something that's under 2 hours and zips along? Anyone who's read those Anonymous Oscar Voter articles knows there's a segment of awards voters who are easily bored/confused and terribly picky; the Romas and Irishmen of the world are not for them.

OTOH, it's pretty early into Netflix contending for major film awards, it took far longer for cable TV shows to break through and win bigtime Emmys.
