Nova
30 minutes ago, TwoMisfits said: But Cats and Dolittle shouldn't be in the same conversation:)... Cats didn't come close to even 1x its lower production budget of $95M...WW it only made it to $73.7M, which is true bomb territory of .775X:). Dolittle has already made it over 1x its higher production budget of $175M with a current WW (that's still going up, with Russia opening this weekend and it still making money everywhere else in decent drips and drabs) of $185.4M, which is only flop territory of 1.06X:)... It's not like Dolittle had more marketing exposure than Cats (instead, it's probably reverse), and kids' movie that are well received make much more in the after market than adult broadway bombs:)... So, Dolittle, which opened very low, has made its comeback from OW bomb to flop territory...and may make it even closer to "disappointing" if it ever gets a China open. Cats has no chance of moving anywhere out of its bomb position:)... We'll see where on the line Call of the Wild falls...better than Dolittle or worse than Dolittle b/c this weekend has already probably lifted it above Cats. The point of my post wasn’t to discuss which movies were bigger flops/bombs but rather to talk about the coverage those movies received when they failed to do well at the box office

narniadis
If anyone still has doubts about how much Valentines day on a Friday really inflated things, take a look at the week to week drops... Even Jumanji cant miss being off 60% from last Friday. Sonic hitting +150% is great / way better than I expected after the harsh Wednesday and Thursdays. Hopefully today also tops 100% Frozen at #18 is the first film on the list to not be off 50%+ from last week (still off -45%) and some are just delicious for those like bad numbers lol a few in the 85% range like the Photograph and Sonic and BOP both nearly at -70%.... As always the data is interesting Edited February 22, 2020 by narniadis

misafeco
I wanted to say these are some awful weekly drops but considering last Friday was VD it's not that bad. I'm expecting huge increases for the family movies on Saturday.
The Horror of Lucas Films
It's quite remarkable how pretty much every movie was opening under the expectations, back in the first months of 2019. While this year, most of movies are opening above expectations, even bombs like Dolittle and COTW are opening above tracking. Long live, Cinema!
