A new someone, dont ban please...

Is just that irrational hate to day and date releases that there is here, like if Dune was Destined to a billion, when Denis Villanueve has never crossed 400 millions before Dune, not even with Blade Runner 2049. Dune got it sequell Thanks to viewership on HBO MAX. Dune had an entire theartical month to itself exclusive international on a lot of markets and just made 100 million before the HBO Max release. .... .

Yes, it's undeserved.

Both Raya and Encanto smash on D+ but both have their shot at theaters, Pixar doesn't have the same treatment and it is unfair, this isn't up to debate.

I know Pixar movies was huge on D+, all of them are some of the biggest movies ever on streaming, everyone knows that. But this is not an argument for releasing 4 movies straight to D+ without any other option, especially when Disney only do that with Pixar because it adds value for the shitty D+ catalogue.

Its not underserved, and Shitty catalogue, WHATT, the biggest IPs well done and you say the catalogue is bad. But one thing is Pixar should be given day and date at least for Lightyear, that movie is made for IMAX just like Dune and That Premiere access makes money. Raya was top on Disney Plus while on Premiere Access. Parents like to babysit kids on TV....

Dune's performance is an argument *for* theatrical releases. Prior to its release, Dune was practically a byword for box office failure, and as you say Denis Villenueve hasn't really made any huge hits (but he makes great movies), and it's the middle of a pandemic. And yet despite a day and date release, it still manages to break 100m DOM and 400m WW. It's a great success and a great theatrical success.

Meanwhile Pixar has practically morphed into a DTV studio. Inside the walled garden of D+, people who aren't subscribers simply can't watch them.

Dune Performance is an argument *for* Day and Date. AT LEAST TO LAUNCH BIG UNKNOWN IN THE MAINSTREAM, FRANCHISES, you really think Dune had the name and recognition to perform better than it did with no HBO MAX? . AND DUNE WAS THEATER EXCLUSIVE FOR 30+ DAYS internationally on a lot of markets with no HBO MAX yet still made only 100 million in all those markets, Nearly all the biggest markets in Europe had 30 exclusive theartical window before HBO MAX Dune in october only in USA. Dune premiered in September internationally. Tons of people had no interest in Dune, they saw it on HBO MAX, said wow this cinematography is great it looks like it was filmed on another planet, lets watch it again On IMAX. IF for Example ALITA BATTLE ANGEL WAS DAY AND DATE, the sequell would be here already theater exclusive.

People on this forum will think this poster hate theaters, theaters are great, but for unknown big budget franchises Day And Date is great to be a launch as with Dune, the sequells can be theaters only if they want. And Animation too of course nowdays. ... .

Is good to have expectations for big box office but some people have generated like a hate for streaming and day and date like if it will destroy theaters, for example Anthony D´Alessandro on Deadline that guy hates day and date he mentions it on every freaking article that has to do with box office . He is obssesed with streamers.

All caps doesn't make something more correct.

Dune made "only" 100 million in those markets where it was theater exclusive but "only" 100 million was quite good considering the markets it got released in.

All caps dont make it false either, and those 100 millions are not that good for those markets including the whole of all top Europe Markets except UK, they are not. .... . Dune was going to make that worldwide 400 millions more or less with and without Day and Date, If it was not for HBO MAX, Part II would not been greenlighted. Dude understand is not that theaters are bad, is that for something unknown in the mainstream as Dune HBO MAX helped, you like it or not. now was succesffull on streaming? yes, then good Part II is theater only, but to deny that HBO MAX did not contribute to the success of the IP is kind of wrong. Denis like it or Not.

Turning Red was a shock, yes.  But as @filmlover rightfully pointed out, this is staying theatrical until Disney announces it isn't.  Endlessly worrying about it/scrutinizing every last statement they say like it was from QAnon Nostradamus is only gonna give you an ulcer.

Turning Red going D+ wasn't that big of a shock for me given that it was an original property (which, unfortunately, is considered a high risk in this environment) and the rise of Omicron at the time gave them a reason for them to not settle for potentially diminished theatrical numbers. It would look silly for them abandon theatrical completely for what is arguably the movie most designed for theater viewing to hail from either of their animation houses since Frozen II.

Just came across this article a few weeks ago that might help calm the D+ exclusive fears

Lightyear In IMAX Will Feature 1.43:1 Aspect Ratio Scenes

https://www.forbes.com/sites/bennyhareven/2022/02/28/lightyear-in-imax-will-feature-1431-aspect-ratio-scenes/

I mean Luca was supposed to get IMAX but it is an encouraging sign.

I wonder if this was always the plan or if Chapek is doing this to keep Pixar from getting angrier at him?

I think it was always the plan only because it's based off an existing IP,unlike the previous 3.

Most likely. But I won't be surprised if he considered making it a Disney+ original and quickly abandoned that plan after the last week and a half.
