I was skeptical when I saw it too. But it's similar to what The Simpsons Movie cost, so I can only assume they were hoping it would produce similar results. Speaking of which, I wonder whether the success of the Bob's Burgers Movie, or lack thereof, will have any effect on Fox's plans for a second Simpsons movie.

Bob's Burgers is part of a long line of leftovers from the dead Fox regime, and based on a property no one outside the US knows about. Why should Disney even try, when they need to promote more relevant projects like Lightyear, the remaining Marvel movies and Avatar 2?

Regardless of what happens with Bob, any new Simpsons movie is better served on Disney+. The first movie came out at a time when the brand was still a global icon. Now, it's significantly less revered. It would likely drop off massively from the first film.

You know, that's a good point.  And I had forgotten that DSMoM had nearly as long a pre-sale period as BW (I think I blocked the experience out from my memory, tbh). 

 

Still, JWD has a longer pre-sale period than DSMoM had (43 vs 30), so that extra length might offset the inbuilt frontloadedness of big CBMs, which in turn might make a DSMoM comp a bit better than it normally would be*. 

* I have little hope of BW being a good comp at all right now thanks to JWD having so many more days of pre-sales, which is why I'm putting it off for a couple of days.

 

I'll take a look at it tomorrow and see if it passes the smell test.  If it does, I'll start comping it tomorrow night.  If not, I'll rope it in whenever I start comping BW.

At least Disney don't dump Bob's Burgers straight-to-hulu (like what they did with Deep Water)

 

I saw TV spots on ESPN and other cables.  (The film even have a 1-minute TV spot; generally only big blockbusters have 1-minute TV spot)

Top Gun: Maverick run from last night...big.  Almost 2K tickets on Tuesday to go with the 3.8K for Thursday.  The Batman did about 4K across all shows on the same day.

If they'd put it on Hulu, it would have just been a long episode. Putting it in theaters emphasizes that it's not just an extra-long episode of the TV show.

What surprises me more is the backloaded-ness of Top Gun’s sales. Don’t get me wrong, Thursday is still strong, but it’s Friday and Saturday in particular are much much stronger. Whatever this does in previews, expect the weekend to be backloaded.

Only speculative reason I can think might be the case is that perhaps with the strong Thurs numbers, maybe theres a worry of sellouts on Fri/Sat so people are buying them up now. Only other thing I can think of is might be many who want to see this on the big screen, and with movies from various studios going out of theatres and into streaming quicker, might be a bit of a race to see it before it goes small screen. Again just pure speculation

Everyone knows the Simpsons. Not remotely the same for Bob's Burgers. So I can't imagine why they would give it a similar budget to The Simpsons. Absolutely boneheaded.
