Do you know the precise date when people decided that three hour movies were too long to watch on weekdays?

When there was a lot more to do for entertainment beyond movies and TV lmfao. Besides citing a movie from over 20 years ago is just insane for box office.

It was the 1990s, not 1890. We had the Internet, video games,  theme parks, sporting events and music back then, too.

The internet was in its literal infancy in the 90s. You can't compare 1997 and 1998 internet to 2022 internet, video games have also changed tremendously since the 90s and have become way more popular and widespread. Theme parks are a luxury that most people can't afford and aren't going to daily. I don't know how you can't see that the landscape's changed since 1997 and 1998.

In 1997/8 there was no such thing as nearly everyone around the world having Internet access for most of the day and 10+ big streaming plattforms presenting a much easier and faster way to watch movies.

In terms of the box office landscape, the late 90s are an entirely different eon compared to our post-Covid reality.

It's as if almost people prefer watching a 3 hour movie on the weekend. Who would have thunk.

… but have less of an issue on Mon than Wed?

It seems to follow a regular week pattern though?

This is the first week we have of any “regular” dailies - previous Mondays were Oweek, when Mon typically is higher than Wed catching the weekend leftovers, and then holiday inflated, so I’m not sure what pattern you’re referring to?

What people are reacting to is not that the raw number is “low”, which can be explained by running time & audience making it a more weekend heavy grosser, but that it was lower than Mon … when everything else went up (except another first week film). The answer to that anomaly is not “running time”

But isn't that usual for bigger films though, that they fall more between Monday and Wednesday than smaller films?

Wasn't it the same in its first set of weekdays, that just about everything increased (that didn't lose theatres) between Monday and Wednesday (despite the storm) and Avatar decreased 10%?

There's probably still some spillover effect on Mondays for Avatar, considering how much of its business it does on PLFs, and how big the Sunday still was.

It didn't stop them going to see it on Tuesday.

The Wednesday drop isn’t great, but the other films are falling more too, it’s January and the holidays are over. I’m sure it’ll rebound over the 4 day holiday weekend.

Is Avatar keeping all of the PLF’s to itself this weekend as well? Weekend 5?

People have been saying it all week, though. It's not like people were ecstatic over the Monday (or Tuesday) number.

No, some Cinemarks are splitting Dolby with the new Indian releases.

That said, it's keeping probably 80%+ of PLF overall...
