Universal’s latest monster movie, the blood-sucking “Renfield,” is sinking its teeth into the domestic box office with $900,000 from 2,750 theaters in Thursday previews. It expands to 3,375 locations on Friday.

This modern take on Dracula won’t be able to drive a stake through the heart of last week’s box office champion, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.” The animated, family-friendly video game adaptation will get another high score at the box office this weekend, with an expected $58 million to $66 million in its sophomore outing.

“Renfield,” starring Nicolas Cage as Dracula and Nicholas Hoult as his lowly servant, is projected to make just $10 million in its opening weekend. Considering the horror-comedy carries a $65 million price tag, it’s not a great start to its run. It will also have to battle the fellow R-rated horror “The Pope’s Exorcist,” which is also on track to earn $10 million this weekend. The upside to the Sony horror movie, starring Russel Crowe as the Vatican’s lead exorcist, is that it only cost the company $18 million.

As someone who hasn't really followed it since that initial trailer, I can't help but wonder why Renfield didn't catch on with the TikTok generation who propped up Megan and Cocaine Bear into being legitimate hits.

Nic Cage isn't exactly a doll or a bear...

Are the zoomers really in on the Nic Cage thing at all? The effects of him not having done studio movies for the last decade maybe. "lol nic cage so random" might be more of a millennial bit.

In general, horror comedies aren't exactly easy sells unless they really lean in one direction (see: Zombieland), and the marketing for this couldn't decide if it was selling an action movie with both comedic and horror elements or a spoof ala Dracula: Dead & Loving It (also a flop). Still, the fact this is likely to make less than The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent and miss $20M total is rough. At least Universal can afford a flop like this with all the hits they've had lately.

Wow, Pope's Exorcist definitely going to come in ahead of my prediction. Honestly wondering if it'll beat Renfield this weekend, given that I expect the latter to be much more frontloaded than a standard horror.

WTF?

‘Air’ and ‘Renfield’ Were Outgrossed Thursday by ‘The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King’

Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King,” which will see its 20th anniversary in December, grossed approximately $1.1 million Thursday night. Per sources, that placed it #2 for the day (behind “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”) — even against films playing 3,000 or more theaters.

Cocaine Bear technically was horror comedy although it wasn't exactly scary.

The budget for Renfield seems far too high at $65m, the two Nics can't be that expensive!
