It has been said a lot already of course, but damn horror movies are just such a safe and profitable investment.

If the FNAF movie wasn't day-and-date it could have genuinely been a breakout

Considering it's on Peacock and not a streaming service people actually have, I think it'll still break out

Anyone else find that the way critics treated this movie was odd? NHF has a higher audience and cinemascore than Joy Ride, yet the critics gushed over that film while NHF had to struggle mightily to get to "fresh" territory its opening weekend and going into its opening Friday was still in the green zone on RT. Not rooting against any film, but it was noticeable. It has clawed its way back nicely, but one would have hoped it would at least have gotten the critical treatment of Good Boys, a film with the same cinemascore, a slightly lower audience score and by the same director. Honestly not a fan of the social media/Rotten Tomatoes era where anyone with a film blog becomes a "critic" and is able to effect the overall  "grade" of a film. Some of the traditional newspaper critics were rotten, but at least they had a stake in the game. And you did not have the sense that films were getting targeted or dogpiled. I get that a film like this is not making a $100 million anymore, but I still thought it was done a bit dirty.

My crystal ball tells me that MI7 numbers next week will be okay, leading people to discuss how out-of-control the budget was etc.

The second weekend drop will be ugly due to Barbenheimer, and people will freak out to a “cancel DR:Part2!!” level.

And then legs will develop very strongly after that Elemental-style, and the movie will end up with a healthy 250M DOM 700M WW.

Insidious is able to overpower lackluster critical scores (36%) and so-so audience scores (3 1/2 stars, 72% on Screen Engine/Comscore’s Postrak) to deliver at the box office. No matter what the response is here, it’s clear moviegoers are bewitched enough to get in the car and go. It’s a total jump scare movie with great set pieces.

Some 38% went to see Red Door because it’s part of a franchise they love, while another 38% went because they love horror movies. What encouraged the audience to go and see Red Door the most in the pic’s marketing campaign, more than its trailer? PostTrak audiences said it was Red Door‘s social media campaign.

CMC Films has the Mandarin language movie Lost in the Stars from Rui Cui and Xiang Liu. Pic did big in NYC, Vancouver, Seattle, LA and Toronto for an $820K opening weekend or $13,2K per theater at 62 locations and 26 markets.

That note about #1s in 2009 is a reminder of just now ridiculously great that year was for the box office. Meh winter 2008 holdovers led to a massive back to back smashes in January and it never stopped. Some #1s under performed (thinking of Wolverine and Angels & Demons in the summer) but it was just a solid year with great choices for all audiences. Imo 2009 was the last truly balanced year before the Superhero craze totally changed the landscape.

Shame we no longer have access to the BOM forum threads from that year. @baumer if I recall the summer game that year was wild due to have well the box office flipped expectations.

Considering how close they are WW (251.9 to 247.9) I wonder when/if Elemental will pull ahead?
