Did this flop in Japan?. I saw on Mojo its made 25mil in a month but i always thought Godzilla films were like massive cultural films in Japan.

Adding to the points of the extremely weak exchange rate for the yen right now, Godzilla movies actually were hit and miss in the 80s/90s Heisei era and most of the Millenium movies (1999-2004) also barely broke even. In comparison, Minus One is doing really well if we compare it to the "typical" Godzilla movie historically. Shin Godzillas performance was a perfect storm and probably wont be replaced in the near future.

Actually, Minus One had just a -6% drop last weekend in Japan. @Corpse over on WoKJ said that it has a 50% chance of reaching 5B yen, which would be a great result.

It did well. Godzilla just isn't that big.  It's one of those things people know, and it is popular, but it's not *that* popular. Even Shin Godzilla couldn't make the 10b yen uber blockbuster mark.

Almost no movie makes 10 billion as has been said previously in this thread, I don't know why people are throwing that around.

They’re increasing theaters again next weekend!

Yep, to 2600 locations.

With this, i am now very confident that Minus One will be able to have a healthy Holiday run. Even with the releases of Aquaman 2, Color Purple and others in the weeks ahead, were now so close to the holidays that even big theater drops from the 22nd onwards wont stop it from benefitting at least a little from the second half of December. And with its daily grosses still pointing to yet another excellent hold this weekend, i see no reason to assume that those theater drops will come soon.

Loved this! After suffering through so many of the garbage Hollywood versions recently which completely miss the point and double down on destruction porn, it was refreshing to actually give a shit about the human characters for once.

Playing the trailer for Godzilla X Kong before this was like night and day in terms of what I want from a Godzilla movie. They couldn’t be more different.

Im sorry, can you translate that? 😄 My Japanese is certainly not good enough to understand this

There will be an announcement tomorrow. It's either a visitor giveaway to commence WW Box Office exceeding ¥10B or Godzilla Minus -2.0 Production. I am thinking about the second but let's see what's the surprise happening! 👀

Oh God please let it be a sequel!

It’s gotta be a sequel announcement. Box office exceeding 10b yen can go along with it.

NOOOOOOOOOO!

Toho! Don't ruin to with a sequel!

Godzilla-1 will NEVER be topped!

Best to have the next Godzilla movie take place in a new continuity. The best thing about this franchise is how each movie can be a restart.

If they had made Shin Godzilla 2 because the first Shin made so much money, we wouldn't have gotten -1.

While i completely understand this argument (and probably quite a few Godzilla fans would agree with you here), its also true that ever since the Millenium Series of Godzilla started (1999-2004), nearly every new Toho Godzilla movie (with the exception of Tokyo SOS) has been a restart movie and frankly, it would also be really nice to have a sequel for once, especially so since Yamazaki seems to really want to do one and with Minus One we got characters that well be automatically rooting for in a 2nd installment.

Minus One struck such a wonderful balance of character and genre film. The post war setting, the themes, Koichi's journey throughout the film. The specificity of the story being told and how the Godzilla side supports character is something that more blockbusters should take note of.

I'm not entirely sure if that magic melding can be recreated if they go the sequel route but I would love to be proven wrong.

It’s just a black and white version of the film.

Kinda glad they aren’t rushing ahead with a sequel. Do it right and make one with the same heart and quality of Minus One.
