That Edwards disaster is somehow a bigger disgrace now than ever before. Never forget it had like a 2x multi when that was basically unheard of for a big budget non CBM. Would love to see this get like a 10x or something, but it’s in the wrong spot on the cal. Next month coulda been a different story.

Nevertheless, the Godzilla reboot was successful because his work sold to some extent. It was especially significant that it grossed 3 billion yen in Japan. The last Godzilla FINAL WARS (2004) earned only 1.2 billion yen. Therefore, at the earliest Toho did not expect much box-office success as a movie.
Thanks to that, Shin Godzilla was made and we have the current Godzilla films.

Yeah, Godzilla 2014 kind of saved the franchise. Everything we have now, including Minus One, woudnt have happened if that film had flopped. Im sure that down the line Toho would have revived the series in one way or another, but i certainty wont complain about the path thy decided to go in our timeline. Imo, Shin Godzilla and Minus One are probably the best Toho Godzilla movies together with the original.

Love G-2014 or hate it, like people have said already, nothing else would exist without it. It revived interest in the franchise as a whole and showed Toho there was still desire for it after the worst box office flop in its history with Final Wars which came after a successive downturn in profits for the franchise since vs Mothra with the only exceptions being G98 (More out of interest then quality) and GMK (Which had a poor OW but incredible legs in Japan). Not to mention, Godzilla 2014 is what single handedly built the modern US love for Godzilla after 98 had tainted the brand for over a decade.

We have come a long way since Final Wars. Godzilla for the longest of times was seen by most people as a silly, man-in-rubber-suits-fight-each-other-series that cant be taken seriously.

Now with Minus One beeing one of the most critically acclaimed movies of the year and The New Empire (whether one likes the trailer or not) getting a considerable amount of hype, it feels like Godzilla is more popular than ever. Its kind of surreal to me since i actively remember those old days before G14, when it was unclear if well ever get another Godzilla movie.

For  a while GOdzilla movies in Japan were like Westerns in the US: A huge part of popular culture still, but people just did not buy tickets to see them.

Yeah. It seems it was less than 15M.

Honestly, it isn't so weird when you consider things like this:

I know about the poor labour conditions. But think about this: Lets give this movie another 50M for its budget, therefore hypothetically giving the VFX artists much better working conditions - it would still have only a 63M budget in this case, far lower than any of the US blockbusters and it would still look better than most.

The main point in this whole budget debate isnt that Hollywood should copy Japans VFX working model or something, thats not the point at all. The point is that Hollywood budgets have blown up so much that it doesnt matter if the next Marvel movie crosses 400M or 500M, it will still be a flop because youd need like 700M Worldwide to cover a 250M budget, considerung all the marketing costs as well. Hollywood currently dooms itself with budgets that dont need to be THAT high.

Its probably because that number doesn't aligned with JPY. Production of Live-action Films barely exceed ¥2.0B in Japan unless its a long time production. Hopefully, once Director clarify the JPY value this dollar crisis can adjusted.

Among Post-CoVid-19 Japanese Film, after "The Boy and The Heron", "Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time" has the biggest budget of ¥3.265B (Early Development in 2009, Production started in 2016 after "Shin Godzilla" which budget was reported ¥1.0B, before March 2021 release)

What's for sure is the next Japanese Godzilla movie is going to get a substantially bigger release. Probably not a full wide release but definitely a much less limited run

I don't think we will ever see a Japanese Godzilla film cross 100M DOM. The sub only showings limit it too much, because people are too lazy to read words.

-1 ending its run near 30M DOM is incredible. That's near 3x legs, which rarely happen for fanboy IPs. Godzilla 2014 film barely crossed 2x legs which is horrid.

Well yeah, but there's clearly not been a bigger opportunity for Japanese Godzilla films stateside.
