James Bond may bring his license to kill to another Hollywood studio after a lucrative stint at Sony Pictures, sources tell Variety.

The November 6 release of “Spectre” will mark the end of a multi-picture pact between Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Sony that has encompassed “Casino Royale,” “Quantum of Solace” and “Skyfall,” the highest-grossing 007 film in franchise history.

However, insiders speculate that the close relationship between MGM chief Gary Barber and Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara could result in the super-spy shifting addresses to the Burbank studio. MGM and Warner Bros. have partnered on several films including the “Hobbit” trilogy, the May box office dud “Hot Pursuit” and the upcoming Rocky Balboa spin-off, “Creed.”

In an exclusive sit-down interview, newly-minted Sony Pictures Entertainment motion picture group chairman Tom Rothman acknowledged that the fight for the Bond rights will be fierce.

“The reality is that Sony’s had a fantastic run with the Bonds,” said Rothman, adding, “Sure we’re going to compete for (the rights), but let’s be honest, so is everybody in the business.”

“I hear Variety is putting in a bid,” he joked.

Sony extended its contract to co-finance and distribute “Spectre” and “Skyfall” in 2011, throwing in the right for MGM to invest on Sony’s remake of “Total Recall,” “21 Jump Street,” and “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.”

James Bond made an appearance in the hack attack on Sony that helped cost Rothman’s predecessor Amy Pascal her job and resulted in the release of reams of company emails and documents. An early script for “Spectre” was among the items that made their way to the Internet.

“This Bond is going to be great and…hopefully we’ll do as good a job as we did on the last one,” said Rothman, noting that with a global gross of more than $1 billion, “Skyfall’s” box office haul was “by far and away the highest that any Bond had ever done.”

I was just about to post this. Very interesting--well a bit more than interesting. As the article points out, Warner Bros seems the likeliest choice. When MGM was trying to find a buyer back in 2010/2011 Warner led the pack of potential buyers, but their bid wasn't high enough for MGM's creditors.

"Time Warner put in the highest bid of the three, the sources said. The company has been seen as most likely to walk away with MGM and its library of mostly classics, such as the James Bond franchise."

There's two things I can think of that Warner Bros offers over SONY: Television networks (TBS,CW, CNN, etc.) and the freedom from having to use SONY products.

The SONY email hack revealed that EON Productions had to turn down a lucrative cross promotion deal with Samsung because SONY exercised their right to have Bond use their branded cell phone.

"...Samsung was willing to give a $5 million fee for its phones appearing in the movie, but a higher marketing spend of $50 million to promote it."

It would be crazy if the franchise went to Disney. Doubtful, but still crazy.

Sony has been a great partner for MGM and EON and I expect they'll have first dibs on retaining the distribution rights but I wouldn't be surprised if Paramount and FOX make a bid, Disney is unlikely and for Warner Bros, it's attractive but they've got enough franchises and they'll only get 25% of the profits.

It's somehow not surprising that Sony exercised the right to put the Xperia phones in Spectre, the product placement in a Bond film is very lucrative hence why brands like Heineken, Coca Cola and Aston Martin continue to have their products in the films for a hefty fee. I don't think I've seen a Sony film that didn't have Sony products in them.

Now that's more like it.

But is anyone getting tired of the the whole 'James Bond must bang someone' shit? He's starting to look like a creepy old man.

They should make an Iron Man movie without the armor.
