Zootopia continues its astonishing performance with what appears to be yet another weekend increase! Its fifth weekend is ~5% higher than its opening weekend, and its second biggest weekend-to-date, only behind its second weekend (by a mere ~7%).

It has also either exceeded a multiplier of 10, or is super close (9.9+), and has yet to show signs of slowing down or even reaching its peak weekly performance (excluding Golden Week). Walt Disney Animation has been on an incredible winning streak in Japan since Frozen, and we're all along for the ride once again with Zootopia. It's, honestly, impossible to project a possible finish since its week-to-week figures have been even/increasing since opening... The market is largely empty until July, so it just might have a shot of outgrossing Big Hero 6 (¥9.18 billion), and going on to achieve the uber-blockbuster milestone of ¥10 billion ($90 million+). We'll see!

After the Storm comes in with a rather disappointing debut, and might have missed the ¥100 million mark if it skewed old enough (seniors lowers the avg. ticket price). It'll likely have great legs due to its weekday business, but its chance of becoming a ¥1 billion earner aren't looking too good. And that'd be rather disappointing considering how well-received, and successful, director Hirokazu Koreeda's last couple films have been.

Girls und Panzer: The Movie sees some absurd increase near 2,000% due to expanding to 152 theaters, adding many premium format locations. Its last reported total was in late April, when it exceeded ¥1.9 billion, so it might have exceeded the ¥2 billion milestone in its twenty-seventh week in release. It'll eventually become the second-highest grossing late-night anime.

There were many doubters.  Now it seems we have more believers.  It just takes much more sound evidence for others compared to others to see the light which isn't such a bad thing. :P

Zootopia's 5th weekend was higher than Big Hero 6's 5th weekend but the latter's total was ¥2B more at this point. Big Hero 6 also didn't drop more than 28% for 6 more weekends. Not saying Zootopia can't manage to out-gross it, but it's got a long way to go. It needs drops smaller than 15% to do it, which is possible but I don't plan to build up my expectations at this point.

How is this the number 4 movie in Japan over the likes of Wreck-it Ralph and Tangled.

Tangled had the misfortune to be relased the day after the tsunami. I'm not sure what happened to Ralph.

@Olive is usually conservative. I'm not if I see something interesting in the numbers.

I think it bumps at least one more time then worst case holds flat. Corpse will call for another 15% drop. I'll lock $100m/$1.05B topping PotC, Olive will say 80m and @catlover would say "100m is not locked!" @Quigley will have his doubts but hope and @Omni will have digestion problems. The DVD get released in July and stops the run shy of $100m. Everyone gets disappointed,  Omni loses weight. @edroger3 and I will argue over the DVD release affect, like I'm arguing about piracy with the loons in the cap threads, insult him and get banned.

I think $100 has a good chance. Not going to lock it. I will donate $20 if it doesn't make though.

Better yet let's do a contest

Pick a final gross for Japan total in dollars. $20 gift card and $20 fandango gift certificate or other international site

Ralph was just not popular in East Asia despite its quality and I don't know why. Maybe it's the not-so-pretty anti-hero thing or its video game theme worked against the Asian market cause Asia has the strong video game culture on its own and the audience felt Ralph "westernized" it too much or didn't use it fully to its potential, I dunno. Tangled bombed too both in Japan and Korea thus couldn't establish WDAS brand either so maybe that's another factor.

At least in Korea, Dreamworks' Rise of the Guardians was much more of a thing due to the popularity of Jack Frost. People all hailed JF saying that they finally got a "good-looking male CGI character from a US production for once"

Anyways, my prediction for Zootopia is $140M. Really. Might change it if something crazy happens on the weekdays.

Edit:

I have just realized that my prediction is actually ¥15.43B when converted into local currency.
