JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

Zootopia officially reached 1 Billion USD Box Office worldwide today.

I joined this thread on April 30 when Zootopia was still around $850M purely just to see the chances of Zootopia hitting that mark

I have never followed the box office of any movie before, let alone this intensely for this long.

Now that it is done, I am bidding goodbye.

I know The Jungle Book is coming close as well (also up to Japan, very similar to Zootopia's case), but I have absolutely no love for that movie.

Zootopia is a very special movie in the sense that it achieved this box office purely based on its quality as a movie. It is neither a sequel nor a prequel of an existing franchise.
In fact, it is the second highest grossing film not based on anything so far (but we all know Avatar only achieved the highest because of its 3D effects, the story itself is very ordinary).
Not to mention the fact that Zootopia did not even start on even grounds with most of the top grossing movies in terms of the marketing, movie release dates, and DVD release dates.

Anyway, it's been an interesting month and a few days

I will have to occupy my mind with other stuff now.

bye

Made an account just to post here. I began following Zootopia's Box Office Run following it's opening DOM weekend. I loved it, but didn't realize just how much I would become involved in following its numbers. It wasn't until it opened in Japan where I began to search out any means to follow its progression (since up to that point it was easy keeping track of the rest), and that brought me here. While I was ghosting in the background, this thread kept me up to date on how it was doing, and I would check it daily...maybe even hourly!

If there weren't so many others tracking its progress, that would've felt like an eternity keeping up with Japan's numbers for Zootopia.

Even though I wasn't active, thanks for keeping me informed, it meant a LOT to me!

I'm wondering how Zootopia will hold up in Obon season. It's going to have to compete against Pokemon XY & Z, Finding Dory, One Piece Film Gold, Shin Godzilla, and The Secret Lives of Pets.

It had around 250,000 seats available per day this past weekend at the sampled theaters. Come Obon time, I'm guessing it will be pared down to around 80,000 seats per day, if it's lucky. That would still be enough room to have a significant box office run, though. And there is no word on the Japanese video release.

Let me try to calculate the weekend totals of the top 3.

Based on this info:

http://mimorin2014.blog.fc2.com/blog-entry-11788.html

1. Deadpool¥376M ($3.52M)

2. Zootopia¥355M ($3.33M)

3. Evergreen Love¥327M ($3.06M)

Assumptions:

Multipliers from sample to actual tickets:

Deadpool: 1.67

Zootopia: 1.71

Evergreen Love: 1.6

Average Ticket Price:

Deadpool: ¥1,500

Zootopia: ¥1,350

Evergreen Love: ¥1,280 (Corpse said that there was a promotion going on.)

80,000 is pretty optimistic. Here's a seat comparison between Zootopia and Big Hero 6:

80,000 is 22% of Zootopia's seats at opening day, and Obon would be its 84th day in theaters. At that point BH6 was down to 13%, and Zootopia has been losing seats at a quicker clip than BH6.

1400 update for Monday June 06, 2016

*1 15642 101114 387 215 *31.5% ズートピア (Zootopia)
*2 11846 136791 415 214 ****** 植物図鑑 運命の恋、ひろいました (Evergreen Love)
*3 *8824 108561 496 223 ****** デッドプール (Deadpool)

This is a better total for Zootopia compared to the similar Mondays of April 25 and May 09. Deadpool is showing signs that it might be a bit front-loaded. Evergreen Love's total is unremarkable.

How much will TJB need from Japan to get 1b?

It's on 895m WW right now.

Had a 4.25m weekend DOM. It could add 15m more.

So updating current WW with final DOM, we get 910m WW.

90m away from 1b.

I am purely guessing 50m from Japan?

So needs about 40m from rest of OS.

Oh hey, turns out I was exactly right on Zootopia's drop. I guess someone had to fill in for Corpse.

And we have a new #1 film! And, of all things, it's DEADPOOL.

Deadpool accomplishment a few achievements this weekend: First, it's the first superhero film to open at #1 since Avengers: Age of Ultronfrom 11 months ago; Second, it managed to dethrone Zootopia from its long reign atop the box office; And third, it's the first R15+ rated film to open at #1 since Ted from, get ready for it, January 2013.

Marvel's hyper-violent superhero sold 248,473 admissions over the weekend on 724 screens, but that was "only" good enough to rank third place over the weekend in terms of admissions. Regardless, it achieves the #1 ranking in terms of gross thanks to its high avg. ticket price, and accomplished quite a lot in the process. It hasn't really shown any early signs of noticable frontloading, so a total between ¥2-2.5 billion ($20-25 million) looks very good right now, which will be more than enough to outgross every X-Men film in the market (Apocalypse won't be a contender later this year).

Zootopia finally falls from its perch atop the box office, but still held very, very well, and posted another excellent weekend. Over its seventh weekend in release, Disney's latest blockbuster sold 263,766 admissions, bring its seven week admissions total above 4.6 million. It should begin to shred some seating/showtimes in larger numbers beginning next week, but it likely still has a lot left in the tank, and is still on course to exceed ¥8 billion ($70 million+) and 6 million admissions (for an insane multiplier of at least 18).

Evergreen Love may have had to settle for a third place debut, but it does achieve the weekend victory in terms of admissions by selling the most tickets over the weekend with 264,270 across 307 screens. Its avg. ticket price was just too low for it to come out on top in terms of gross, though. This debut is quite good, and the best that Shochiku has had since Love Live! opened almost exactly a year ago. If its stage greetings over the weekend don't impact its legs too much, then a total of ¥2 billion ($20 million) is certainly attainable.

The Kodai Family debuts in a distant, and disappointing, fifth place over the weekend, selling just 75,976 admissions across 308 screens. There's little to discuss concerning this debut; it's simply very poor.
