JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

I'm really curious to know what the budget was for Sadako vs. Kayako. Even if it did scrimp together $9-10 million by the end of its run, that doesn't sound like much. Unless the production budget is really, really low.

I also love that Zootopia is still standing strong in Japan. Its multiplier, while not the absolute greatest of all time, is nothing to sneeze at.

The multiplier for Zootopia is exceptional.

Do you know where Corpse gets the yen totals? I can only find Japanese articles that list movies by admissions.

Some of weekend numbers are reported on local sites, like Eiga, but they're usually limited to openers.

So the remaining figures come from bunkatsushin, a professional Japanese trade paper that covers the entertainment industry. It requires a monthly subscription fee of ¥18,000 (~$150) for the newspaper and web version, but my Japanese friend and I split the monthly fee of ¥7,000 (~$55) for the web only version.

*6 133043 *746 178.3 225 351 64.1% デッドプール (Deadpool)

Looks like there's only one major new release, and judging by how many seats it has, it's probably expected to be #1 this weekend. All of the holdovers seem pretty blah at this point.

Too Young To Die! is positioned to lead a weak box office weekend before Summer's tentpoles begin to roll-out starting next week.

Starring Ryunosuke Kamiki and Tomoya Nagase, the fantasy comedy is about a high school student who dies in a bus accident, later waking up in Hell regretting that he never confessed his feelings to his crush. So in order to return to the living world, Kamiki must perform with Hell's Agricultural High School rock band, Heruzu, where he gains special training from the group's leader, Killer K (Nagase).

The film was originally scheduled for February, but was delayed four months. Pre-sales are decent and suggest an opening around ¥200 million or a bit better, which should be enough to debut atop the box office.

Too Young To Die! wins Saturday by a comfortable enough margin that it should have the #1 debut secured, and is still on target for an opening of ¥200 million or slightly higher.

Zootopia is heading for a superb tenth weekend hold, possibly in the single digits if Sunday delivers (it usually does). Since it's continuing to post solid numbers, and has maintained a weekend ranking in either first or second place since opening, it'll be interesting to see how Disney and theaters handle it next weekend when Alice Through the Looking Glass opens.

In the past whenever the next big Disney film releases (excluding Marvel; they have little presence in the market), the one that's currently in release suffers severe screen/showtime cuts to provide the new film with ample screenings. I don't know if they'll decide to cut Zootopia's legs short next week as a result, or if they'll wait until Finding Dory opens in a couple weeks later to do it then.

Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt - December Sky certainly isn't making the Top 10 with those admissions (which are down considerably compared to the recent Gundam Origins films).

A typically slow, boring June weekend ahead of the Summer Box Office Season.

Too Young To Die! appears to have opened above ¥200 million, and while that's not much, it's enough to debut atop the box office and isn't too bad for a June release, honestly.

Beyond that... bring on July/August.

Overall, this June hasn't been too bad. It's traditionally a dumping ground, and this year's will end up with potentially five ¥1 billion earners: Deadpool (done), Evergreen Love (done), 64: Part 2 (done), Sadako vs. Kayako (maybe), and Too Young To Die! (maybe). Also, Deadpool's going to clear the ¥2 billion mark (notably impressive for June), and Evergreen Love might reach the milestone as well.

>Too Young To Die! takes the top spot in its debut, selling a solid 188,028 admissions across 288 screens over the weekend.

The film enjoyed a fair debut, especially for an opener in the month of June, and is very likely to exceed the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone.

>Zootopia falls to second place after recapturing the top spot last weekend, but continues to post very impressive numbers at this stage of its release. A second place ranking, and a weekend easily above ¥100 million, is very impressive for any film in its tenth week of release.

And after its tenth weekend of release, Disney's breakout blockbuster has exceeded 5.5 million admissions and is still on track to sell around 6 million. It has also exceeded the ¥7 billion milestone, and as long as it survives the upcoming summer competition, it's still on course to exceed the ¥8 billion ($75 million) milestone.

>Deadpool is still hanging on well, particularly well for a superhero film, and overtook X2: X-Men United to become the second-highest grossing film in the X-Men universe. It only needs to exceed ¥1.85 billion now to outgross the original X-Men, which it'll do well before next weekend.

>The Worst Bad Guys in Japan only manages an eighth place debut, selling 51,950 tickets over the weekend on 178 screens. Toei's ongoing struggle to produce a hit live-action film continues, and the low screen count suggests they've begun to realize their limitations in the genre.

¥154.9 million (-40%) [5th] / ¥14.31 billion -> ¥15.50 billion - Ponyo (2008)

¥150 million+

Zootopia joins an even more elusive list than last week! Absolutely remarkable staying power.

Excluding The Wind Rises (the 17th highest-grossing film of all-time), every other film on the list is actually one of the Top 12 Highest-Grossing Films of All-Time in Japan, yet Zootopia is "only" going to crack the Top 60 (maybe Top 55) despite being in their company here.

So Zoo just going to cross over the last baseline set($70m) when it began its weekly decline. Who is the low man in the contest? Olive at 80m?

Yen at 102 to the dollar. Gives TJB a 15% XR edge over Minions and JW last year. Will make $60m easier if at all possible to get to a billion

I thought we changed the contest to be in yen.
