WTF? Its a spinoff for christ sake

You're caught up on that and ignoring the fact that this is a spin-off like no other. The Minions are their own brand now. They're absolutely everywhere, Amazon even has them plastered on every box they ship out for the nest several weeks. The trailer and TV spots are going over like gangbusters everywhere.

Its acting as a sequel then? Still see at least a 25% decrease at the best. DM2 was without a doubt the peak of the franchise

Like Bourne 1-3 and F&F? Universal has every intention of making this the biggest DM film or damn close to it.

Neither of those franchises had the massive domestic surge with the sequel that this one did. No this franchise is acting more like PotC or Transformers.

That was also the month with 3 $100m OW and 3 $300m grossing movies.  They ate into each other in a big way on top of them not being very good.

Yep, and there aren't any other (likely) $100 million openers or $300 million grossers this July.

Even with a 25% decrease, Minions could very well gross over $100M OW DOM. Remember, Despicable Me 2 opened on a Wednesday and grossed $145M DOM over its first five days.

DM2 5-day: 143M

Shrek 2 5-day (adj): 169M

Shrek 3 3-day (adj): 145M

Similar drop would put Minions at roughly 122M. However, Shrek 2 made $200M more than DM2 overall - its legs were far stronger. So an opening at the level of Shrek 3 seems really, really unlikely. I think it will do 110M tops.
