Movies like FF7 and MH are definitely outliers in how much they earned. But even $200 million shouldn't be so easy to toss around. As MI5 has shown, not every Hollywood action blockbuster will earn what AoU or JW did. I don't expect Spectre or SW7 to do it, but major CBMs like Civil War and BvS should if AoU is an indicator.

I expect Star Wars 7 to reach the $200M mark. JW was able to hit the milestone, so SW can do that, too.

Weekly Chinese Box Office Preview: Game Over For 'Pixels' In China (BoxOffice.com)

"Rather than throwing every single film into a market they think will guarantee a return, Hollywood studios need to start reevaluating what kinds of films they release in China. This Tuesday's opener Pixels is a prime example of the thinking that pervades executive offices in Hollywood when it comes to the Chinese market."

"In emails leaked by hackers, Sony executives decided to amend a scene from Pixels' original script where aliens shot a hole through the Great Wall to avoid offending Chinese regulators and secure a China release. We think Sony should have shot a hole right through their "Pixels in China" strategy trapper keeper and stayed out of the country altogether to avoid offending moviegoers."

 MINIONS may not match BH6 if it doesn't recover this weekend.

Would be interested in your analysis when you get a chance of what went wrong with either everyone's oversized expectations of MI5 and Minions or with their actual BO under-performance in China.

Maybe people are saving their money for local titles in next two weeks since they can watch MI5 and Minons online already.

But didn't BH6, JW, AOU and maybe KFP2 all face piracy too at the time of their releases? Or it this specifically the case for Minions and MI5?

Because if all film faced the same level of piracy then the other reasons would be interesting to explore

How were the reviews for Minions, and what is word of mouth like?

It doesn't seem like poor quality has effected other big Hollywood releases.

On douban, it has a rating of 7.6 which is pretty good. I suspect that most people have already watched it online, hence there is no need to go to the theaters unless they really really like the film.
