Not going to get into a debate but Spielberg is a more influential director than Cameron even though Cameron is killing it at the Box Office these past 15 years. Movies like ET, Jaws, Jurassic Park and Indiana Jones changed filmmaking. Movies like Saving Private Ryan, Schindlers' List and now Lincoln have proven Spielberg's mettle as a serious filmmaker. Cameron has made a lot of money for himself and for his studios but his influence begins and ends with the Terminator movies. Jury is still out on Avatar as 3D has been treading water for the last couple of years.

Box Office wise: Cameron is doing better recentlyQuality wise: It's all about personal taste, Do you prefer Cameron only 8 movies (Avatar, Titanic, True Lies, Terminator, Terminator 2, The Abyss, Aliens, Piranha) or Spielberg 8 best movies according to RT (Jaws, Indiana Jones1, E.T., Schindler's List, Close Encounters, Saving Private Ryan, Lincoln, Minority Report)?

Remember I'm talking about blockbusters (I really loved Munich for instance). Which Spielberg's blockbusters have really been impressive on every levels and universally acclaimed since Jurassic Park?WOTW? Minority Report?None reached Titanic or Avatar's level of success, not even Jurassic Park's success.

Avatar is hugely influential. The motion capture technology alone paved the way for ROTPOTA.

So is this considered good for the HOBBIT with the number it has achieved thus far or a disappointment compared to the LOTR movies???

Well, it's certainly a disappointment compared to LOTR, it's more a question of how much of a disappointment.

I'm not saying that Michel Bay is better filmmaker than James Cameron, but If you taken Avatar and Titanic grosses from his filmography would left only 550 million and If you take away the two biggest grosses (TF2, TF3) from Bay's filmography would left more than 1 billion. I'm saying that cameron had luck with Titanic and Avatar, even with adjusted talk Bay is 300 million ahead of cameron (Cameron without Avatar, Titanic and Bay without TF2, TF)
