Steven Spielberg and George Lucas predict film industry 'implosion'

Recommended Posts

I read this yesterday and I think they are spot on.  It's amazing how people think studios are making this Big Money when in fact they are losing money on certain blockbusters.  I agree with them.  The small films will be cheaper and all the Blockbusters will cost an arm and a leg.  Plus these guys know the industry just as good as anyone so I'm inclined to believe their theories about the box office.

I certainly wouldn't disagree with them. Right now it feels like we're in this transitional phase where some television, particularly in cable, is the medium that allows more artistic risk. I'm not entirely sure I'll like where the film industry is at in ten years.

I can definitely see a situation in five or ten years time where only the big blockbusters (in 3D! with motion seats! and smellovision!) get wide releases, with tickets costing $20+ and everything else goes direct to netflix or other streaming services with only a limited theatrical release to qualify for awards/build buzz. The sad thing is that digital filmmaking was supposed to open the movie business up to everyone, but cinema is dying as an art form, while TV and internet-based media flourish.

"We're talking Lincoln and Red Tails -- we barely got them into theaters. You're talking about Steven Spielberg and George Lucas can't get their movie into a theater," Lucas said. "I got more people into Lincoln than you got into Red Tails," Spielberg joked.
