Confession: I'm not entirely sure when I'm going to present the list. I'll have it completed by tomorrow, but I'm going to be in a car for 8 hours. At the latest, I'll do it sometime this weekend.

riczhang to his army of tweed-wearing cigar-smoking wine-tasting popcorn film-hating minions about his plan to take over the Top 100 list by launching a coup in the thread and disposing of Sims:

From page 1:

-Films in a series must be listed separately. No votes for just the "Lord of the Rings trilogy" or "Kill Bill," etc. If you can't come up with separate rankings, choose just one film to represent the series (e.g. Fellowship for LOTR). If you disregard this, I will allocate the points to the film in the series that has received the most points from other members.

It looks like some of the trilogy movies are going to lose some points as I saw a couple of list that didn't break the films out :(

I refuse to break the films out on principle. If the films suffer, they suffer, but on principle I think it is unfair to do that.

I find this an extremely odd sentiment, as I've mentioned elsewhere. The vast bulk of sequels and/or trilogies are not planned in advance. They are entirely separate entities from conception, pre-production, production, through post-production. Lucas didn't plan on EMPIRE when he made STAR WARS (and in fact, that movie has different writers and a different director, even though Lucas was the general overseer). Coppola wasn't planning GODFATHER II when he made the first film (though he quasi-retconned 'em all together later). And GODFATHER III sure as hell wasn't planned when he was making GODFATHER II. Leone wasn't planning THE GOOD, THE BAD, & THE UGLY when he made A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS, etc.

How are these examples different from, say, TERMINATOR 1 & TERMINATOR 2? Or LETHAL WEAPON 1 & 2? Or YOJIMBO and SANJURO? Yet there's seemingly no issue about listing them separately.

I think that planned in advance or not is irrelevant. There always will be the overarching story elements that really tie the film together. Standalone films have that element in them already while series don't. It's unfair to judge otherwise. And of course certain movie series that have absolutely no tie or very little tie from one film to the other (*cough* Bond *cough*) are listed seperately.
