Only in the northeast are public schools closed during Columbus Day. The rest of us have wised up.

Is it safe to say, in a pretty great year, that Gravity is easily the box office story of the year? Also, besides Departed, is there other similar comps to Captain Phillips? I'm hoping there's a chance for 115+

Captain Phillips definitely has a chance at that. Other similar movies would be Flight (93mil) Argo (136mil)

Brilliant October, but the only thing hurting it for me is the lack of a true horror movie (Carrie barely counts). It's still Halloween month. Halloween is what makes October great. Even if the quality isn't usually high, I need at least one scary movie.

We can basically add more restrictions until Gravity is the only movie that fits. :P

Everyone missed the point in the article where they stated - smallest decline for a movie opening over 50m not on a holiday weekend. Otherwise avatar with its freakish -3% wins lol

Actually no... I think that title belongs to Puss In Boots' second weekend.

"Puss in Boots eased just three percent to $33.06 million in its second frame. That's the smallest non-Holiday drop ever"

Didn't Puss in Boots change release date like 3 weeks before it opened and faced a heavy snow storm on the east coast?

No idea... Thing is, it did score just a 3% drop in it's second weekend. So long it wasn't a holiday, it counts as a record.

Saw this beast today. Amazing. Saw it in 2D and didn't felt the need to see it in 3D.

Both are true.

Columbus day is technically a holiday.
