Toy Story beat Pocahontas in 1995, Bugs Life beat a Mulan in 98, Toy Story 2 Dominated Tarzan in 1999. Things went down hill for Disney Animation in 2001 when Monsters Inc had the biggest opening for an animated film ever, while Atlantis flopped.  In 2003 Finding Nemo became the biggest animated film of all time (until shrek 2) .... the same year it looks like Disney made the Jungle Book 2 ( I wasn't even aware this was in theaters...) From then on I'm pretty sure Pixar always had the lead, because Disney stopped making animation until Chicken Little.  Tangled beat Cars 2 but they were different years....

So yes, It looks like this will be the first time. Probably in Rotten Tomatoes Score as well.

Disney's 2003 release was Brother Bear, which had a fantastic OW/final multiplier, due to opening on a Saturday, of all days, but grossed far less than Finding Nemo.

They had a 2004 release of Home on the Range, vastly disappointing, and Pixar had The Incredibles.

Other matchups:

Ratatouille vs Meet the Robinsons (2007)

Wall-E vs Bolt (2008)

Up vs The Princess and the Frog (2009)

Toy Story 3 vs Tangled (2010)

Cars 2 vs Winnie the Pooh (2011)

Brave vs Wreck-It Ralph (2012)

As far as RT numbers, both Winnie the Pooh and Wreck-It Ralph garnered a higher tomatoscore than either Cars 2 or Brave.

Seems like Jan 2 is more of a northeast thing. Elementary-High School went back today here.

The school district I went to is apparently going back tomorrow (the 3rd) which makes even less sense. Maybe it's an overall eastern thing? :P

In Wisconsin we are back in school. I really think it is just random.
