Joy easily looks the most Christmas-y film out of the three though. The Big Short is about 2008 financial crisis and Concussion about football head trama. I dont know if audiences are dying to watch either of those downers over Christmas.

The Wolf of Wall Street and Django Unchained were holiday releases that did very well despite a heavy emphasis on themes that didn't exactly provide warmth, and even though it had something of a built in fan base, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo still made $100M with its marketing selling it as "the feel bad movie of the holidays." There is certainly potential for a movie that doesn't sound like it provides Christmas cheer to do well.

Wolf of Wall Street and DJango weren't really marketed as dark. They were bombastic, action filled and with comedic moments. They also contained Leonardo Dicaprio, who can basically sell anything.

Dragon Tattoo did ok, but not amazing and that also had some action in the marketing. Concussion and The Big Short look like more traditional Oscar-y dramas.

True, but they still didn't exactly scream "fun time at the movies over the holidays" on paper what with themes of slavery and debauchery (Wolf's untimliness with the holidays had more to do with the "don't see this with your parents" buzz than the actual movie).

Also, The Big Short is a comedy with dramatic elements for the most part.

Daddy's Home. It'll be the first alternative if SW7 sells out for most families, since it looks slightly more interesting for adults/teens/kids over the age of 10 than Alvin 4

It's the kind of film that does $75 million+ DOM during Christmas time. (Parental Guidance, Little Fockers, Meet the Fockers, Cheaper by the Dozen 1 and 2, Bedtime Stories, etc). The last time this kind of movie did sub-$75 million during Christmas was... Fat Albert.

I also think Revenant and Hateful Eight won't be hurt by SW7 at all due to Oscar buzz and their R ratings. Sisters/Alvin 4 should be successful, too.

My guess for the top 12 December 2015 releases

  1. Star Wars Episode VII: $875 million

  2. The Hateful Eight: $150 million

  3. Daddy's Home: $130 million

  4. Sisters: $105 million

  5. The Revenant: $90 million

  6. Alvin and the Chipmunks 4: $80 million

  7. Joy: $55 million

  8. Krampus: $45 million

  9. Concussion: $40 million

  10. In the Heart of the Sea: $35 million

  11. The Big Short: $30 million

  12. Point Break: $15 million

uh, $875m domestically?

I know, not even 900m...

Will any film designed to counterprogram work? I mean, Star Wars appeals to pretty much every demo out there, and it's obviously the event film of the season.

Yes. Look at Christmas 2009

Avatar- 749m

Alvin and the Chipmunks2- 219m

Sherlock Holmes-209m

It's Complicated-112m

Up in the Air-83.8m

The Blind Side- (91m after Avatar opened)

When lots of people go to the movies, it tends to drive business for other films. Im not saying that's its going to be exactly like 2009 but with SW sells outs it's likely that other films will benefit.
