Those were the days with reals bombs....

When was the last studio movie with a 100m budget doing Mars Needs Moms/The Adventures of Pluto Nash/The Alamo type of WW performance ?

The Chris Hemsworth sea movie (In The Heart of the Sea) was a huge bomb. I’m sure it cost $100m and domestic gross was less than $30m.

Disney seems to "need" a bomb per year. Sounds like a constant they need to keep their spiritual balance or something.

2010: Prince or Persia (336M ww on 200M budget)

The Sorcerer's Apprentice (215M ww on 150M budget)

2011: Mars Needs Moms (39M ww on 150M budget)

2012: John Carter (284M ww on 250M budget)

2013: Lone Ranger (260M ww on 215M budget)

2014: surprisingly, the only year with no underperformers

2015: Tomorrowland (209M ww on a 190M budget)

2016: The BFG (183M ww on a 140M budget)

Alice Through The Looking Glass (299M ww on a 170M budget)

2017: Alice Through The Looking Glass (299M ww on a 170M budget)  (another no-bomb year)

2018: ¿A Wrinkle in Time?

Well, we have to admit they bomb only when they try to give us something else...I liked John Carter and Tomorrowland. A Wrinkle in Time will probably please me.

As it is their risks do have their fans, and I'm sure this will still have many people crying out that the masses "didn't get it", but I don't think that's what people really hope for when they stan for something. Speaking from experience, it's much easier on everyone when the critics and a satisfyingly large audience love it too.

I remember watching that unfold from the sidelines (hadn't joined up yet).  T'was always going to be a dud, but the leadup to TFA and all the overwhelming buzz/anticipation for it killed whatever meager chance Heart of the Sea had for even being 'just' a disappointment.

Don't get me wrong, if TFA didn't exist, I doubt this would have gotten much more as it looked terribad.  But with TFA looming it went from .01% chance to doing alight to 0% chance.

WB really bungled this.  It would probably have been a bomb anyway but maybe not so much. But they moved it months on the schedule after they'd already started advertising it and then as pointed out it got buried in TFA buzz.

It still did almost 100m, it is a good step above those 100m+ movie not reaching 50m WW.

I don't want this to bomb because tons of riding is on those kids and it would suck if they had to deal with a bomb at their age. That said, I hope critics don't chicken out when it comes to Oprah. She looks terrible and never gave a decent performance since Color Purple (that's back when she was an actress and not a personality).

She was a personality back then as well, it was right before she was nationally syndicated but she was working in local media for years before that.  Color Purple was her first acting role.

She was great in it. One of those movies that always make me tear up including her scenes. :(
