Disney executive came out to announce Avengers 2 box office was 44% over Avengers 1 and 24% over Iron Man 3. That smells like impulse purchase marketing to push the opening weekend up by $100 million to $200 million to me. I am not buying that. The movie has a 20 week run. If the movie is good, it will be good after 10 weeks as well. I will wait for 10 weeks for the impulse purchase marketing effect to wane and if the movie is still good at that time, I will go and see it.

FF7 is trash. Pure trash. Expendables kind of trash. 

 

It only got good reviews because of the Paul Walker eulogy at the end imo.

 

So you don't care for F7. That's fine, but it doesn't make anything unfair.

 

I'm not particularly a fan of the first Avengers, but I don't think it's unfair it did as well as it did, grossing far more than many other films I do like a lot. It did a lot that appealed to the audience and that generated big business.

 

F7 did the same. It is an exemplary action film that catered to the audience very well. As indicated by the two previous films in the series, Walker's death and eulogy was definitely NOT the only reason it got good reviews. Perhaps they bumped them up a tad, but it would have made only a marginal difference.

 

 

Beyond that, when you get down to it we've got two films that cost a lot of money to make (both have reported budgets of 250m, although I suspect AoU's is actually considerably higher, while F7's was bumped up to that amount so they could work in the changes from Walker's death). Both of them will have extremely high worldwide grosses and earn a ton of money for their respective studios.

 

As mere viewers and fans, we won't see a cent of that money. And thus I really don't think it's fair or unfair if one earns slightly more for a corporation than the other.

I think this is a very good comparison: both are highly anticipated popcorn blockbusters, both are the last installment of a long term franchise, both opens during the explosive growth of the chinese market, both are deflated by weak exchange rates. BTW in next update I will add also the TA numbers.
