Christmas Numbers: Unbroken 15.59, ITW 15.1, BOFTA 13.1, NATM 7.35 (official estimates) | full BOM list on p22

TH3 had constantly better drops and increases than ROTK. ROTK increased 37% from Thursday (Christmas) to Friday. If TH does the same it would make 18M, way over the 16.5M first friday. Even if it doesn't increase that much, it should hardly fall from it's 3 day OW. I'd say it is well into the run for No. 1.

BOFA will hardly increase anywhere near ROTK's 37% on Friday. Hopefully it's about $15m on Friday, which would be very good.

I think Unbroken benefitted from a lack of competition more than anything else. Those who had no desire to see The Hobbit or a family or musical film (Into the Woods, Annie, Night at the Museum) pretty much flocked to it en masse.

Movies don't make $15+ million on Christmas Day by default. Universal didn't let up with the advertising and the book has been on the bestseller list since it came out in 2010. Wouldn't be surprised at all if it plays like The Blind Side, but TBS never positioned itself as a Best Picture frontrunner so it got the "it's nice enough for what it is" reviews, while critics were harsher with Unbroken. Which, going by RT score, makes one movie seem much "worse" than the other, but the general audience probably won't see it that way.

And more screens

Yeah and les mis kinda fell off a cliff the next day..... -30% or something because of its fame and frontloading. Itw shouldn't see that, especially since low screen and theatre count means more spillover from yesterday and whatnot.

Why is that? Just curious, since till now they had very similar drops/increases.

Team Aniston vs. Team Jolie? Is this 2005? Move the hell on, people.

This war is simply one that will never stop until one side is obliterated from the face of the earth.

It's Marvel v DC. Playstation v Xbox. Star Wars v Star Trek. You can't stop this.

Universal deserves an award for their Unbroken campaign. Advertising was pitch perfect, and relentless (first TV spot came out a year ago!). Jolie and cast promoted it tirelessly as well for months.

I thought the trailers were kinda cheesy. It was the subject matter I was interested in.

Because Christmas Day seems to have been a lot stronger. It will balance out.

With a $15m Friday it should make close to $40m for the weekend.
