NEW YEARS DAY BOXOFFICE

That's really on them for fucking up the expansion.

From what I have been reading the movie is not very good and is even less accessible to the GA than The Master.

Wonder if the college football playoff games cut into movie going yesterday. There are always New Year's bowl games but the national championship game has been well past Jan 1 for years now. Comparing it to the NFL, the conference championships don't get Super Bowl ratings but still really huge and it has an impact on movie attendance that Sunday. Yesterday was the college equivalent and early indications are that the ratings were pretty big: 15.5 for Oregon/Florida State and 15.3 for Ohio State/Alabama.

college football playoffs baby!

Both games are also the highest-rated New Year’s Day college football games on an ESPN network ever.

Huge ratings, especially when you consider the Ohio State game didn't end until way after midnight! More than double the ratings of last year's NYD night game.

And it's an even bigger impact when you consider that the semifinals pretty much ran from 4pm until 1am! That's a huge chunk of time. (Though the people who tuned in early at 4pm got to see a thriller from Michigan State instead of the planned Rose Bowl pregame.)

Consider that it wasn't just 1 big game, but it was 2 games that both broke the record for biggest ESPN NYD game ever.

Good to know, especially as this probably affects Unbroken more than any other movie -- Universal advertised like crazy during pro and college ball games.

I doubt it. If anything it would affect the big action movies like Hobbit since those target the male demographics most likely to watch college football. Unbroken's Thursday gross is 28% higher than its Tuesday gross. That's better than a lot of other movies.

Also there was the Winter Classic NHL game, it probably contributed a bit too.

Horrible for Unbroken.

Disregard this if that was sarcasm, but nothing about Unbroken is horrible at this point. This is shaping up to be a very successful film that may be nominated for several academy awards. It is another big win for Jolie this year.

Perspective:  It was one of the only films to increase on NYE, so naturally when there is more things for adults to do on NYD, it will have a muted increase.
