Weekend #s | 50SOG 81m, (RTH Sunday puts it at about 84M) Kings 35.6, AS 16m, JA 9.43m (official) | all #s on p1

So who's gonna predict a big drop for the sequel? I would think an OW would drop to about 65-70M, even if it opens next Valentines day.

If Universal can keep the budget at a similar level to the first then they'll be okay with a drop since it'll still be profitable

82 million dollars at the U.S. box office in 3 days, despite a 28% on Rotten Tomatoes.  The movies with the Best Actress nominees had an average wide opening weekend of only 9 million dollars.

What the average U.S. box office total of the movies with the Best Actress nominees will be - 50 million dollars.  What the average U.S. box office total of the movies with the Best Actor nominees will be - 100 million dollars.

But can the sequel match the original

without Firth, Jackson & Caine in it?

Those guys all did add to the marketing and did an excellent job, sure, but they aren't such massive stars/iconic characters they can't be replaced. Heck, Leo was supposed to be the baddie in this one. Get Neeson, Leo, and McKellan and it's still gravy.

Really, cause from the marketing I didn't even know Caine was in the movie.

Ugh, fuck you guys for posting Kingsmen spoilers. They were in spoiler tags so it's my fault (came into the thread not paying attention) but still, fuck you. :(

Those of you freaking out about the projected Sunday drop for Grey need to look past valentine's history particularly 2004 and 2010 while the 60% is steep it's not totally out of the realm of possibilities. Add to that the factors we already know - front loaded presales and older audience who is less likely to be effected by a holiday on Monday and it makes perfect sense.

I actually think that Sniper and Kingsmen will be overestimated due to some of the same circumstances.

At least Universal is going on the high side.  They've already made a pile of money this weekend so they have nothing left to prove.  And this way, if the drop is only 50%, bonus.  As for Sniper, why only a 40% drop?  Didn't they learn their lesson last weekend?

Does it really matter where the money comes from?  80 million is spent the same way whether it comes from 15 year old brown girls with a lisp or from 50 year old green women going through menopause.

Which is why I stayed faaaar away from any spoiler tagged comments in regards to Kingsman until I went to see it yesterday. No way was I going to see this movie knowing what was going to happen beforehand.

Well that's a whole different issue. This is a forum made up of individuals. Some people do what you describe and some don't. I'm not trying to fight with you I just try see it all from another perspective. I remember times when people would make crazy clubs and when it fails they disappear from the forums.  Some like CJohn stay around and take their lumps. It was all in fun. Now it just seems like everyone is so serious about it. I say let people have their moment of sorrow. :)  Well everyone except John Marston.

speaking of Clubs, I need to find my Battle of Five Armies, under Desolation of Smaug thread. and do a little victory dance. it was close but there is now a 99.9% chance that it won't cross it. :D

At the end of December, it looked like it would beat DOS, but now it'll come down below it. :( BotFA deserved to be the highest-grossing out of the Hobbit movies IMO.
