Wow.   Nice to see a weekend like that.

I wonder if I should give another one of those FF movies a chance.   Watched the first one and it seemed very generic...never watched another.   But they are on the SEVENTH one now and it does this?   I'm missing something.

It happens. I love the Bourne and Mission Impossible movies, but I can't get into James Bond to save my life. I myself loved the first F&F, but when the second one came out, it turned me off of the franchise as a whole. I would still watch the first one, but I just wouldn't bother with the others. I think I finally caught Fast 5 on tv one day, and then I watched the latest one, for Paul, but I have yet to sit down and watch 2, 3, 4 and 6.

Wow, is this one of the biggest estimates to actuals rise?

Funnily enough it's the second time THIS YEAR that a new release has beaten its estimate by 3.5m. FSoG also did it. (Slightly less than F7 in total, but a much larger bump percentage-wise.)

Man of Steel also beat its estimate by 3.5m.

The Avengers probably takes the cake: 7.1m underestimate.

when your estimate is 200 i think that's excusable lol

Actually, it turns out that Avengers wasn't the biggest underestimate. I went through the entire archives BOM has for estimates (no further than the fall of 2002), and I think these are all the films that had actuals at least 3m higher:

The Passion        7.6

Avengers        7.1

Avatar            4

Valentine’s Day        3.9

Shrek 2         3.7

PotC: DMC        3.6

Furious 7        3.5

Man of Steel        3.5

Fifty Shades of Gray    3.5

Spider-Man 3        3.1

The Dark Knight        3.1

As expected, most of these are among the biggest openers of all time. Valentine's Day is quite an outlier, though, with it's relatively paltry sub-60m opening.

(There were a couple other non-opening weekends that also seemed to be underestimated by similarly high dollar amounts, but I think in most of those cases it was either an error on the part of the estimates or on BOM's transcribing the data. Moneyball's 3rd weekend comes to mind.)

If I get some time I'll probably go through and find the biggest discrepancies for percentages.

Good work. All those late night shows and shows added at the last minute probably screws up all the math in real time.
