The 2 situation are a bit different if we believe the rumore that transpired and selling international markets to finance most of a production is not that special for a studio, like selling all market minus China a la cloverfield.

Reports are that Skydance thought it was too smart for the plebs so they tried to dumb it down. Rudin had final cut and said no, so Paramount had to get the Netflix deal done to placate Skydance. So, it seems like it's a case of it being too good.

I don't get hype for this. Looks like a smush of Sphere, Solaris, Ruins, Lost (some weirdo zone where everyone's fears/desires come to life that may be induced by an alien/ancient/futuristic/etc force). Nothing new.
