Universal Pictures’ Pitch Perfect 2 and Warner Bros.’ Mad Max: The Fury both debuted last night in previews starting at 7 PM in a weekend that pits a female-directed musical comedy against a male-helmed violent, dystopian actioner. On over 3,000 theaters, we are still waiting for Warner Bros. to weigh in with its gross for Mad Max (3D) but Universal just reported that Pitch Perfect 2 belted out $4.6 million in 2,652 theaters last night.

FIOS opened to $8.2 million in previews, for reference. Though I expect this to end up around the same for the weekend gross.

22 Jump Street midnights were 5.5m so i'm not sure PP2 hits 50m this weekend.

22 Jump Street opened in the summer where it's target demo had already finished classes. I have a good feeling PP2 will be safe and end up in the mid-50s.

I'd expect PP2 not to be as front loaded as Fault, no where near in fact.

22 Jump Street was a summer release so it should compare well to that.

That's....great for Mad Max. The Great Gatsby did 3.25m two years ago. 50m weekend "could" be on the table.
