Franchise broke out before he died

Big diverse cast vs a Tommy solo act, basically

Only to the extent that it was improving and then hit it into the 700s WW.  Walker's death made the franchise go super nova.

The issue with the franchise is that when it began 22 years ago, to the chagrin of fans of the tv show, it's selling point to general movie goers was essentially seeing the world's biggest film star playing his version of James Bond.

The appeal lay in who it's leading man was and not in it's stunts and for much discussed and documented reasons, domestically, it's leading man has been nowhere near universally popular or beloved for the last 12 years at least.

Yeah obviously Walker death was a huge factor in the franchise;s explosion but the convo was about FF movies being bigger than MI, and F6 was already 100M over what these last two MIs did

True, I guess maybe replacing Tom Cruise with The Rock would help this franchise break $1 billion lol

I think they took a bit too long to capitalize on MI4 (4 instead of 2-3 years) and there was the entire last minute rushed out nature of MI5 which didn't give it time to rebuild hype through the marketing.    Also I think Cruise slightly undercuts the franchise by doing B level action movies like Reacher in between just like I think Edge of Tomorrow  suffered a bit from Oblivion.

I mean, Fast Five taking the franchise to new heights probably has as much to do with it turning the franchise into a great action series as it does with the multi-ethnic cast and The Rock being brought in. And then 6 went higher thanks to that WOM, with 8 showing that domestically 200-230 is probably where this franchise's peak is now.

Interesting to note that they set up a team in 4 and then dumped Patton, sidelined Renner and really only kept Pegg as the Cruise sidekick

So you don't really have that throughline

That's a common theme in Jeremy Renner's career.

Quality before quantity, gentleman. Tom Cruise didn't jump out of a plane well above cruising altitude over night. That takes incredible timing and precision, especially when the green screen is not considered an option. This series entire catalogue can only be counted on one hand over a couple of decades for a reason.

I remember reading McQuarrie wanted to bring back both Patton and Maggie Q for Rogue Nation. Not sure why that didn't work out, but I hope the former's reason was not due to Warcraft filming.

Wow Warcraft really annihilated her career, huh
