Jurassic World Weekend Thread | Official Est. 204.6M | 208.8M - Actuals

Recommended Posts

Lolololol at people suggesting Civil War/Infinity War/Fantastic Beasts/BvsS will touch this opening weekend. It's delusion.

We all underestimated just how popular this property still was and just how high the nostalgia factor would affect it. The fact that tracking had this pegged at 125 (which was also the general consensus on these forums) and it's opening nearly 100 MILLION DOLLARS above that is just insane. Universal did everything right here and kudos to them for it. I love the first two films and didn't really like the trailers but somehow everything worked for me in the actual film and it's just so much fun. This type of opening takes cultivating. Whether it's 5 or so years as was the case of Avengers or 20 with something like JP, these extreme outliers aren't flukes. Yes the HP fanbase is huge and rabid but Fanatsic Beasts simply isn't the same. I think it will do big business but nothing like this monster. And I think it's safe to say that the Marvel Unvierse has found it's ceiling with TA1. There's no reason Civil War or Infinity War should go higher. Batman v Superman argument is one big laugh. Star Wars is the only thing that has a true chance at topping this and I'm excited to see just how high the turnout for it ends up being.

This is one of the most fun weekends I've ever had on here.

I only meant OS with Fantastic Beasts. DOM not even the main Potter franchise could do those numbers.

Five years now counts as nostalgia? Who are you, iJack?

You'd think that way, but a good example is Pottermore, the site JK created for the fans. That instantly became and currently is is mega success, being visited only in the first 6 months by almost 40 million unique visitors. Since the publication in 1997 of the first book till 2011 we had continuous content, then it stopped. Dont underestimate the nostalgia.

There were still reports of audiences clapping at the end of JW last night. Those weren't fanboy crowds, WOM won't be an issue.

Maybe it's like maleficient, a medicore movie, not that well receive in rating but connect with the audions and gets great legs.

I'd agree with this more if Transformers 2 didn't gross $200M+ over its Wednesday through Sunday opening. And, did so without 3D and much IMAX.

I do think WOM is good. I think the WOM for Spidey, Dark Knight and Avengers was great though.

Twitter wasn't a big deal in 2009.

It's not delusional.

If AOU was a great movie and there was no Mayweather fight, you don't think it could've made over 208 m OW.

That's just an extra 17 m.

But I'm not making an argument for or against AOU. Im looking forward. AOU is a prime example of why I think Infinity War and Civil War CAN'T take the record, because they're going to have to deal with the fallout of WOM. TA1 had phenomenal WOM and no I don't think the mayweather fight shaved off 17 million. It should have topped TA1 but didn't, not to mention is gonna end up about 200 mil less overall. I think that's a fair sign that those films may have peaked. TA1, like JW, is the anomale because it has everything working for it. Edited by RyneOh1040

As a fanboy I agree with most of your points but why would the finale of the most popular literary franchise of all time open LOWER than a spin off? HP2 was the fanbase response at its absolute loudest, which is evident in the midnight and Friday number. I can't see how Fantastic Beasts gets more awareness than that film had or more crossover appeal. I don't even think it tops DH2 weekend, 135-150 would be a huge win for it.

I only meant OS record, and that is if it opens in China during the same weekend, a thing DH2 did not have. It could fall a lot from DH2's OW OS, and still break the record because of China.

For the DOM total I see around 250M max with maybe a close to 100M OW.

"Jurassic World" Clearly had a "WOM" factor, as well as Spillover as Demand was not met from "Previews" or Fri and as Sunday showed, Damand was not met Saturday either with all the sell out reports.  We all watched it unfold in real time.   Yes "AOU" got a slightly better critical response but I think Audience Buzz was way Higher after people saw "Jurassic World".

JP4 has one of the most satisfying endings of any summer action movie I've seen. That is playing well with audiences.

A record that will stand until at least the dying days of this decade! That one's proving very hard to beat.

Both Spider-Man and The Lost World's records lasted so long due to the main contenders opening on Wednesday/Thursday. Episode 1 would have definitely broken TLW's record with a Friday opening, and Matrix Reloaded or Spider-Man 2 would have probably done the same for SM's record.

Reloaded taking the record would have been awesome just to see a R-rated movie do it.

Yeah, i saw the movie yesterday, and there was applause. The general audience loves it, and it should have pretty good legs

Sure it will be tough for any movie to match TA's domestic total.

It opened above 200 m and had great legs but OW and WW could easily get topped.

JW is not going to keep the OW record for 3 or 4 years.

Let's get real.

It barely beat the old record. Movies like Svengers and Spider-man decimated the old record which is why they kept it for 3 or 4 years.

True, and something I hadn't thought of.

I think Guardians 2 will be biggest OW for Marvel Studios aside from Avengers. I actually believe it could possibly gross just over/under $200M. Unlike Ultron, in which Iron Man, Thor and Caps got a solo after Avengers and before it, none of the Guardians are gonna be seen again until 2017. Not to mention, Pratt's first live action tentpole after GotG/JW. I expect a Pirates 2 like breakout.
