I thought the general consensus prior to MM:FR opening was that it was going to bomb because it sat on the shelf too long, nobody cared about Mad Max, the film was being thrown to the dogs by being put in a crowded summer slot. Or was that only before trailers dropped? Am I misrembering?

 

That was well before the release. General sentiment got (somewhat) upgraded to "well, it'll open around 30m, which isn't that good, and it probably won't get to 100m".

So could Pixels be another Pacific Rim style tracking freefall? I remember tracking OW predictions dropping from $50m to as low as $25m as the days went on.

I don't remember PR tracking ever being anywhere near $50 million.

Pixels seems like a movie I would be all over if it didn't star Adam Sandler and Kevin James. Can't stand the two of them nowadays. If it were, say, Paul Rudd and Jason Segel in their roles, I'd be there opening weekend.

 

Exactly. First strike against it was Adam Sandler and Kevin James, then the unfunny trailer drove away any interest that might have been there.

 

Same concept could work with better jokes and better leads. This could bomb big time.

OK, I just pulled that number out of my ass I guess. Whatever it was, I remember the eventual $25-30m tracking being a steep drop, to the point where the $37m OW was a recovery.
