One of my favorite blockbuster films of the year. And I did not expect to love it that way.

Genuinely funny and Jack Black was wonderful in it. A great comeback for him. 

Planning to see it again.

Night at the Museum 1 should be a pretty great comparison with Jumanji right now. NATM ended up with $250M DOM due to January holds, Jum can end up with a bit more or a bit less since it opened a bit bigger than NATM.

Jumanji had 19 mln Monday, and 17 mln Tuesday so does Sing. Jumanji total 89 mln vs 93 Sing. Jumanji should end higher than 250 mln.

I don't think it will have the staying power to get that far, but it should get to $200m and that's really good.

Because Jumanji will be at around $190m DOM at the end of New Years day.
NATM made 50% of its total DOM at that point.
While I don't see Jumanji making another $190m after NY, 110m is completely doable.

With a $50 million+ 3-day, I think Jumanji could do this, given the fairly weak family tentpole competition from now until Feb 16. Paddington 2 and Peter Rabbit are the only major releases targeting at least part of its demo for the next 6 weeks.

This movie is absolutely killing it. Took the kids (with friends) last weekend and we were surprised at how good it was.

 

This weekend, I was away for a bit and the kids badgered mom into taking them AGAIN, and my older daughter even brought the same friend to see it again because they both thought it was so good. Older daughter thinks the movie has one of the best depictions of the ups and downs of teenage girl friendships she's ever seen in a movie. The movie is really good all around, but its Jack Black's performance channeling Bethany that puts it over the top.

If it has a 30m weekend for 236-237 cume (5-6 on Wed and Thu), then adding 2.5x the weekend more will give it 311-312 dom. I think that's the territory (challenging Thor3's #7 spot on Dom charts) it's heading to .... or more.

I guess Jumanji's christmas success can also be chalked up to the timeless appeal of Chris Van Allsburg's children book.

 

By the way, Chris Van Allsburg's art is incredible. I know there has been a Jumanji cartoon back in the day but his original illustrations would be worthy of an animated movie (using Disney's short Paperman technique) that doesn't feature a creepy CG Tom Hanks:
