Sicario deserves to bomb. Why? Not because it isn't good. Because they scheduled it against The Martian. That's what you get releasing against a bigger movie also targeting adult audiences. Same thing with The Walk

The release schedule of September/October is a fucking disgrace.

Sad but not surprising to see Sicario struggling against the competition. I hope it finds legs but the places it goes during the third act may not please American audiences who are used to generic formula.

They shouldn't have opened it against several other higher budgeted and more heavily marketed adult skewing films.  It''s why Hardy's Legend was bumped. They also probably expanded too fast and should have let it build more word of mouth.

I feel like the exclusive early releases of Everest and The Walk were mainly because both Universal and Sony were fully aware that they had tough sells on their hands and tried to see if they could create a sense of urgency by pushing the "spectacle" angle as much as they could. It didn't work out apparently. Oh well, it's not like either movie cost that much to begin with so they really won't lose anything.

If The Walk sees a lower than 3M number this weekend, then there is a good chance Pan gets IMAX next week.

Sony also screwed Everest. Everest seemed to only be making money in IMAX mostly based on the drops it saw once it lost IMAX.

The Walk and Everest screwed each other by releasing so close to The Martian and other adult skewing titles. This IMAX talk is just noise.

No one cares about a film about a guy who walked across a wire. It's a dumb concept.

Anything can be a dumb concept when you phrase it like that. No one should be interested about a guy using the scientific method in order to grow potatoes, either.

And just releasing so close to each other. IMAX is expensive, and chances are that most people are going to need to pick between one or the other in terms of films designed for IMAX that they wouldn't watch on a smaller screen. Well, I guess The Walk is the one that bore most of the brunt, but I don't think it helped Everest at all.

Steve Jobs changing its release pattern is probably going end up working out better for it than if it had gone wide right off the bat next weekend as originally planned.

It didn't help Everest and it's sure as hell not going to help The Walk. Even Sicario's insane PTAs won't help it do more than what was expected.

At least that is thinking outside the box.

You could easily say that the Walk is a movie about one of the greatest achievements in acrobatics and daredevil spirit in human history. It's just a pointless way to talk about movies.

It's different in Steve Jobs' case because it's going to be playing exclusively in NY/LA next weekend, only a select number of other places the following and then everywhere on the 23rd. No gimmicks to drive up ticket sales like Everest or The Walk, and it's obviously nowhere nearly as dark as Sicario (which is doing about as well as could be expected for the kind of movie it is). So, bad comparison.

I've seen alot of anger and vitriol thrown around by fanboys on this board, but this intense hate here for a well-reviewed, small-scale Robert Zemeckis drama about a guy who walks across the World Trade Center is.........pretty stupefying, to be honest.
