99 Homes Foreclosed

Why did they open this so wide so fast?

I'm wondering if Zhang Yimou's Coming Home is gonna hit the top five this weekend (yes, sarcasm) -- I was one of five in my local theater on Friday night...the other four were two geriatric couples.

And the punchline is the box office guy heard me wrong and actually sold me a ticket for 99 Homes...so I didn't even give money to the film I wanted to...sigh.

I think they were contractually obligated to. The movie had a lot of buzz when it screened at the festivals last fall and then was picked up, but then the studio sat on it for a year and decided to release at a time when there was so much competition that it would have no chance to survive.

Also, BOM doesn't keep this list, but Pan's estimate just squeaks into the 10 worst openings in over 3,500 locations. For the actual to be in the bottom 10, it just has to not increase any more than $26k with actuals (which is how much it is under the Footloose remake).

In terms of attendance, Pan's estimate is either the 6th or 7th worst OW admissions in over 3,500 theaters (BOM's adjuster decreases the $15.5m to $15.1m, putting it under the adjusted OW for Nim's Island; since the Q3 average is not in yet, their adjuster is dividing the Q2 '15 average by the Q1+Q2 '15 average. BOM's quarter vs. year adjustments are strange...)

Either way, it sucks.

Next weekend will be a fun one to watch, The Martian or any of the new releases could be number one and we might have 4 movies over 20M.

It doesn't look that good for Crimson Peak to be honest, it has had pretty bad marketing and it isn't even a horror movie according to Del Toro. The younger audience has Goosebumps to go to, the older audience will choose Bridge of Spies (Spielberg + Hanks should get it a 20M OW at the very least), and of course The Martian and HT2 will both be holding well. Crimson Peak is coming in targeting no specific audience at all, it won't have enough horror for horror-junkies and doesn't look appealing enough for anyone else.

I can see Crimson Peak having strong holds in weekends 2 and 3 but dropping off completely after that.

For next weekend I have Goosebumps at $25M, Crimson Peak at $16M, and Bridge of Spies at $15M. Bridge of Spies looks too old-fashioned and dry to open any higher than mid-teens (especially when it's going to skew so old, like expect a 90%+ over 60 demographic report) but legs afterwards should be excellent since its only competition is Steve Jobs, which it can easily co-exist with.

Crimson Peak is gonna bomb pretty hard. I am thinking it barely cracks 10M OW at this point.

I won't too be surprised, to be honest. I want to see it but I just don't think there's much of an audience today for a Victorian era horror costume romance that relies more on atmosphere building than "boo" moments. Universal is pushing Steve Jobs much more, at least from the TV I've watched.

In other news, Steve Jobs is opening here next weekend. Can't wait!

Oh yeah, I can't wait to see Crimson Peak as well. But I am not the GA

Steve Jobs only opens internationally on the November 12 weekend :( At least we are getting it on that weekend.
