I really don't see 10CL as horror, to me it's just a small sci-fi thriller, really. I guess ParaNorman could count, but again, not entirely sure.

ParaNorman is a Children's Horror movie. That is the only way I can describe it.

And 10CL is a thriller that for some reason becomes Sci-Fi at the end.

Out of diversion, I decided to search which have been the highest grossing DOM years for horror since the beggining of the 21st century. Found a chart on Numbers.com that helped, and mixed that chart w/Box Office Mojo to complete some missing info.

With that in mind, here's what it looks like, and where 2016 lands so far:

2007 - 693.4M (which is very debatable, since it included I Am Legend)
2005 - 587.9M
2009 - 584.6M
2006 - 553.2M
2000 - 525.6M
2010 - 523.7M
2013 - 470.2M
2004 - 467M
2003 - 450M

2016 - 436.1M
2011 - 404.3M
2001 - 391.3M
2015 - 389.3M
2002 - 297.8M
2008 - 293.6M
2012 - 287.1M
2014 - 258.2M

I counted Don't Breathe's OW, which is actually a lowball according to Nile (overperformed on Sunday). DB will be adding at least 40M to its run, and get the year on around 470M, tying it w/2013.

The combo of Blair Witch + Ouija 2 will probably bring around ~100M (70-80M from Blair Witch, roughly 20 to 25M from Ouija), and w/the aid of Rings and all the ones dropping in early December, it should push near or past 600M, which would make it by far the highest grossing horror year of the 2010's decade, and the 2nd highest grossing year of the 21st century (and if you discard I Am Legend, it'll be THE highest grossing horror year of the 21st century so far).

Check page 1 of this thread.

2008 is the worst year on record for horror worldwide. 2015 and 2014 failed to reach a billion, something horror has done every year since 2004, minus 2008.

We are at $825.2 million worldwide so far this year.

Great job! And what's even more incredible about this year to me is that before the beginning of year, nobody had idea how big it would be, the only big deal was The Conjuring 2, and now, we already had several hits (and most of them, original stuff!), I'm really curious to see how 2017 will handle, from now, the only hits that I see is IT and Annabelle 2.

A year tomorrow, Wes Craven died.

So sad.

Such a sad loss! :(

Since we're talking about Craven, does anyone know what happened to Alexandre Aja? I remember him being a big deal in The Hill Have Eyes days, the media used to say that he would be the next Craven, but he just.... Disappeared, weird, isn't it?

Annabelle 2 will be the 100M+ hit of 2017, for sure. IT, I don't know, since I'm unaware of how well versed audiences are into Stephen King, maybe The Dark Tower will give us a hint of that. Saw: Legacy is a guaranteed hit, as well. The rest is a question mark if there ever was one. Is The Nun coming out next year?

He's done a few movies, his last one was Horns, with Radcliffe, I believe.

Anabelle 2 can make half of the last movie both DOM and OS and will still the biggest horror of year, IMO. If it end being a good movie, it could actually stay flat, I wonder if there will be another 'The Conjuring effect' in this one? The Nun hasn't received a release date yet, but the fact that WB moved Anabelle from Halloween to May makes me confident that they're releasing The Nun in the Halloween.

Does the public even care for another Saw? I can see this flopping hardy, seriously, just look at how bad the 2014 re-release tanked, I feel that the public is completely tired of this franchise

Oh, true, I forgot about this one!

But I'm talking more about Maintream appeal, his last movie that received a wide release was Piranha back in 2010, it's a bit sad that he wasn't able to break out because he's one of the few filmmakers that knows how to make a truly raw movie.

He might want to be more mainstream. Like Radcliffe he may just want to be in this fringe place that let's him do what he wants.

I think it should do good.  25/45 run, since there's no doubt it'll be massively frontloaded.  Still a good result given that it'll be very low budget.  The reason the re-release tanked is because it wasn't even in 3D or some crazy gimmick.  It was just...in theaters.  That's it.  People can still watch the same at home for less instead of paying full price to see it in theaters.

Thing is, I'm actually confident it actually will be a good film. Because David Sandberg is directing it, and Sandberg is responsible for Lights Out. The director of the original boring mess of a film was the same guy that did Mortal Kombat: Annihilation after all  And yes, Annabelle 2 will have a Conjuring effect. The 1st Annabelle, despite painstakingly bad WOM, grossed 84M DOM in late 2014. In mid May, with virtually no horror competition, the attachment of the James Wan/David Sandberg names ("From the producer of The Conjuring and the director of Lights Out" = everybody goes batshit crazy), and the brand of The Conjuring-verse, all it'll take is for it to be actually good and it'll blow up big time.

As far as Saw is concerned, it'll have been 7 years since the last one, which may give audiences time to get a breath of fresh air and readjust themselves for this stuff. And the re-release flopped because of uneffective marketing and lack of a hook to it (no 3D, no IMAX, no nothing, just a bland re-release).

I saw Lights Out last night. I like that they didn't try to explain the logic behind the 'ghost' and how to defeat it, that's when horror movies are ruined for me. Instead, they focused on the scares and in making us care for the characters. It's kind of forgettable, but I was invested and very entertained from start to finish. I know people complain about the ending, but I like to not think of it as a statement.

I love High Tension, The Hills Have Eyes and Piranha 3D.

High Tension (2003)

The Hills Have Eyes (2007)

Mirrors (2008)

Piranha 3D (2010)

Horns (2013)

The 9th Life of Louis Drax (2016)

Hopefully a studio snaps him up again for something soon.

Oh, yeah, when I use the word 'flop' I'm not being literal, I know that it's impossible to this movie be a flop, since the budget probably will be lower than $5m, lol.

But I do believe that it is going to be another huge disappointment for this franchise, since the third installment, it is losing public DOM, when we take off the 3D share, even the "final" movie had a decrease in ADMs as well, I just don't see any reason to this movie do good numbers since, it's basically a combo of: fatigue + lack of appeal, does the torture porn genre still have appeal to the public? What was the last hit of this genre? We're, fortunately, living in a new Era for Horror, and I don't see Saw receiving attention anymore, the same goes to Paranormal Activity.

I do hope that the second movie will be good, although, I don't consider the first one bad at all, it's just bland, as you said! I'm more curious about the OS potential for this one, tbh. The first movie was a beast OS, TC2 managed to increase as well, I wonder if this movie can reach $200m OS alone?

It's worth mentioning that with the release of Anabelle 2 next year, the TCU will have made $1B on a tot budget lower than $100m, this is going to end as one of the most profitable franchises of all time!

Yeah, I agree that the main reason why that Saw re-release tanked was because it had no hook, but I also believe that it was Lionsgate trying to see if there was still any interest in this franchise, and the answer was no, lol. And I don't think nostalgia will be big here, the last movie ended 6 years ago, after releasing one movie per year since 2004, and most of them left a bad taste in the mouth of the public.
