"The Light Between Oceans is a tearjerker that plays like an extra long Lifetime TV movie with a Grade A cast."

"is beautiful to look at, but this feels like a Lifetime movie given the A-list treatment....in failing to steep us in Isabel's pain and mental state in act two, Cianfrance leaves us with an overly indulgent husband and self-centered wife in act three."

"The Light Between Oceans" is lushly shot and exquisitely acted. It's also elegiac bordering on stodgy, a soapy, workmanlike drama reminding of a 1990s-era BBC production at best and a network Movie of the Week at worst."

Snobbish film people looking down on TV again as if film doesn't churn out the same kind of crap that Lifetime does all the time.

Well, yeah, Lifetime movies suck.

I say that, having never watched a Lifetime movie.  I'm still confident in my opinion.

This doesn't even suck, it is simply a well acted bore fest.

This wouldn't be opening Labor Day if it wasn't.

On the other hand, it's not like Disney has any clue how to do a proper platform release.  It this didn't deserve that so, works out.

Labor Day weekend is just the weekend where studios take some subpar, generic film they're forced to distribute and say "okay just slap it on this release date and let it die a quick death."  It's not really a surprise it turned out this way.
